Report: Despite Economy, Entertainment Subscriptions Hold Up

Port Washington, N.Y. - While fewer Americans subscribe to newspapers and magazines, the subscription model continues to either maintain popularity or grow in areas including television, music, games and mobile services, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group.

Report: U.S. Video Game Sales Fell 19% in October

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales dropped 19% in October from a year ago, to $1.07 billion, continuing a recent downward trend that will likely lead to slightly lower annual sales figures than 2008, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Overall sales this year so far are down 13%, to $11.43 billion, and are likely to reach $20-$21 billion, below 2008's $21.3 billion total. "The continued economic turmoil, and in particular the troubling unemployment rate, is undoubtedly impacting industry sales," said NPS analyst Anita Frazier. "If consumers' personal outlook continues to erode, they could very well be much more conservative with their holiday shopping this year."

Report: Video Game Software Sales Down 6% in Q3

New York - Video game software sales across the U.S., Europe and Japan fell 6% during the third quarter of 2009, according to a report combining sales data from NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Enterbrain. While Japan actually saw video game software unit sales increase by 15% in the third quarter -- compared with the 20% decline seen in the same period last year -- year-to-date sales in the country are down 9%, according to Enterbrain.

Report: U.S. Game Sales Up 1%; Sony PS3 Leads for First Time

Port Washington, N.Y. - Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 for the first time ever led U.S. video game sales in September, which on the whole rose 1% from a year ago after several months of  decline, according to sales figures compiled by market research firm NPD Group. Overall sales were $1.28 billion in September; despite Sony's success, game hardware sales fell 6% from a year ago, to $472 million.

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales slid for the six month in a row in August, down 16% from a year ago to $909 million, and are now down 14% year-to-date, according to sales data compiled by market research firm NPD Group. Hardware sales fell 25%, to $298 million, although NPD noted that all consoles except Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PS2 realized sales increases over July levels.

- While digital music sales are taking a larger share of the U.S. market, and Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store now accounts for one of every four songs sold, CDs still comprise 65% of all music purchases, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. "Many people are surprised that the CD is still the dominant music delivery format, given the attention to digital music and the shrinking retail footprint for physical products," said NPD analyst Russ Crupnick. "But with digital music sales growing at 15 to 20 percent, and CDs falling by an equal proportion, digital music sales will nearly equal CD sales by the end of 2010."

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales were down 29% in July -- their fifth consecutive month of decline -- to $848.9 million, and are down 14% overall from the same period last year, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Hardware sales fell 37% from a year ago; Nintendo's Wii led all consoles with sales of 252,500 units, while the Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 sold 202,900 units and Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 sold 121,800 units.

Port Washington, N.Y. - The percentage of American video game players (63%) now outnumbers those who have gone out to the movies in the past six months (53%), according to a survey conducted by market research firm NPD Group. The survey found that one in three gamers bought a console or portable game over the past 12 months -- up 7% on the prior year, while 10% of U.S. consumers played video games on a social network, and 5% paid to download a video game from the Web -- up 2% from last year.

While game software sales plunged 23% year-over-year, to $510.7 million, NPD noted that April 2008's numbers up were nearly 50% on 2007, fueled by the release of blockbusters "Mario Kart" and "Grand Theft Auto 4."

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. teens (ages 13-17) acquired 19% less music in 2008 than they did a year ago, with CD purchasing down 26%, download sales down 13%, and, surprisingly, tracks downloaded from file-sharing networks down 6%, according to a survey conducted by market research firm NPD Group. "While we expected to see the continued decline in CD purchasing among teens in NPD's music tracking surveys, it was surprising to see that fewer teens downloaded music from P2P sites or borrowed them from friends," said NPD analyst Russ Crupnick.

Port Washington, N.Y. - The U.S. video game industry continued to buck the economic downturn in February, with sales up 10% from a year ago to $1.47 billion, led, once again, by strong sales of Nintendo's Wii and DS systems, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. "The U.S. video games industry continues to post strong year-over-year comps despite the tough economy. Unit sales increased even more than dollar sales did, reflecting a slightly lower average retail price for all categories as compared to last year," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Port Washington, N.Y. - While 17 million fewer U.S. consumers purchased CDs in 2008 compared to the prior year, the number paying for digital music was up by 8 million, to 36 million Internet users, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Overall, there were 13 million fewer U.S. music buyers in 2008, led by a 19% drop in CD sales; only 58% of Internet users reported buying CDs or digital music downloads in 2008, compared with 65% in 2007. NPD noted that the decline in CD buyers cut across all demographic groups, but was particularly focused on teens and consumers 50 and older.

New York - Online gaming grew in popularity from 19% in 2008 to 25% this year among the 20,000 respondents recently polled by market research firm NPD Group.
