London - U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 announced that it has signed a deal with Disney/ABC's Buena Vista International Television that will bring episodes of "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" to both its website and video-on-demand system. Channel 4 will offer two seasons of "Lost" in HD and the second season of "Desperate Housewives" on video-on-demand services from cable TV firm ntl/Telewest. The "Lost" episodes will also be available for 24-hour download via Windows Media Player from Channel 4's website. All episodes will cost 99 pence (about $1.25) each.

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft has announced that its MSN Video unit will provide an exclusive live webcast and on-demand video highlights from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. In addition to performances, MSN will offer artist photos, interviews, feature stories, playlists and other content. Beginning on April 30, MSN Video will webcast performances from artists including Bruce Springsteen, Herbie Hancock, Elvis Costello, Keb' Mo' and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. MSN plans to donate all advertising proceeds from the show to New Orleans Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Philadelphia - Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider, announced on Thursday an agreement with NBC Universal, to offer over a dozen of the company's most popular network and cable programs through Comcast's video-on-demand service. NBC primetime programs will become available as early as midnight following their on-air broadcast for 99 cents, while late-night and daytime programs will be available at no additional charge. NBC Universal programs offered on Comcast VOD will include NBC's "Law & Order," "The Office," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien"; USA Network's "Monk"; Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica"; and Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown". Comcast said that its 21.4 million cable subscribers have viewed more than 2 billion video-on-demand programs since the company launched the service in 2004.

Home Entertainment Group announced on Thursday that it will become the first major studio to offer a downloadable version of a film on the same day as its DVD release, when it offers "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" through partner Free Record Shop in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium. Along with "Harry Potter," FreeRecordShop.nl will offer nearly 100 Warner Bros. films as permanent downloads, including "Ocean's Twelve," "The Matrix" trilogy, "Casablanca" and "Doctor Zhivago". The movie download service from Free Record Shop, which operates 185 stores in the Netherlands, will deliver copy-protected films using Microsoft's Windows Media format. "We are excited to be the first studio to deliver secure and legal download-to-own films through the Internet simultaneous with the film's DVD debut," said Warner HEG president Kevin Tsujihara, adding that the service will "combat piracy by providing high quality, affordable and legal downloads."

Los Angeles - The premiere episode of a new WB series that saw some racy scenes edited from the broadcast will be offered in an uncut streaming version on the WB's website, Reuters reported. The uncensored version of "The Bedford Diaries" includes scenes where two female college students kiss, and one unzips her pants. Series executive producer Julie Martin said the WB decided to cut the scenes, despite their having passed network censors, in light of the FCC's recent affirmation of $3.6 million in fines for indecent broadcasts including the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident. "Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to make some additional changes to the premiere episode," the WB told Reuters.

New York - In a bid to increase demand for its mobile music download services, wireless carrier Sprint Nextel may begin offering mobile music subscriptions, and expand its partnership with Sirius Satellite Radio so that users could download songs they hear on mobile Sirius channels to their phones, Reuters reported. In addition to a possible subscription service, where users would pay a monthly fee for full-track song downloads, instead of the current $2.50 per song, Sprint chief operating officer Len Lauer told Reuters the company wants to offer direct downloads from the 20 Sirius channels it offers subscribers. "We'd like to have the capability later this year that the customer listens to a song and says, 'I want to buy that song,'" Lauer said.

New York - Apple is now offering download bundles featuring multiple music videos from a single artist, as well as combinations of song downloads and music videos, in an effort to increase profit margins at its iTunes Store, Billboard reported. For instance, the company is offering all 21 music videos featured on a Tori Amos DVD, "Fade to Red," in a music video bundle for $24.99. Apple is also selling video bundles from Green Day and the Foo Fighters, and song/video bundles from Nelly and the Pussycat Dolls. "It's a natural fit," Eddie Cue, vice president of applications for Apple, told Billboard. "These are not replacements for people buying individual songs or albums. But they're great for well-established artists with a fan base behind them that wants more product."

Akimbo subscribers purchase a TV set-top box which enables delivery of programming over a broadband connection for $9.99 per month.

Philadelphia - Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider, announced on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with independent film distributor IFC Entertainment, to offer movies on its video-on-demand service on the same day that they premiere in theaters. Launching in March, the IFC in Theaters service will debut two independent films each month on Comcast On Demand on the same day as their theatrical release, for a video-on-demand viewing fee of $5.99 per movie. At least 24 films will be released simultaneously in theaters and on demand in 2006, including "CSA: The Confederate States of America," "I Am a Sex Addict," "Three Times," "American Gun," "Russian Dolls" and "Sorry, Haters".

Then, if their numbers are announced by an actor during a "10-second break-away from the program's scripted action," the viewer wins $500. Seattle - Loudeye Technologies, a provider of branded digital music stores and other digital media services, announced this week that it plans to raise $8.25 million through a secondary stock offering. The company will use the proceeds for working capital and general corporate purposes. Seattle-based Loudeye laid off an undisclosed number of staff earlier this month, as part of a plan to cut costs by $2.5 million per quarter. The company also said its shares are in danger of being delisted by the Nasdaq, for failing to maintain the $1 minimum listing requirement for 30 consecutive days.

San Francisco - Restaurants and cafes represent the fastest-growing segment of Wi-Fi hotspots, according to new data from San Francisco-based JiWire, a provider of public Wi-Fi hotspot information and services. The company said that 34,544 restaurants and cafes currently offer Wi-Fi access, an increase of 18,267 from a year ago. Tokyo has the most restaurants and cafes with Wi-Fi access (1,037), followed by London (578) and Singapore (410). San Francisco has 319, second in the U.S.

Atlanta - Internet service provider EarthLink announced that it has partnered with satellite TV operator DirecTV, to offer customers in select markets a bundled package of DirecTV and EarthLink broadband Internet service. DirecTV, which has a similar agreement with broadband provider SBC, currently claims more than 15 million customers.

Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of subscription radio programming with 6 million subscribers, said on Monday it signed an agreement with the NCAA's Big East Conference, for the exclusive satellite radio broadcast rights to the Big East men's and women's basketball championships.
