Amazon's CustomFlix Launches CD on Demand Service for Indie Musicians

Santa Cruz, Calif. - CustomFlix, a unit of Amazon.com that provides on-demand distribution of CDs and DVDs, announced on Tuesday the launch of a new CD on Demand service for independent musicians and record labels. CustomFlix will manufacture and ship CDs as customers place orders from either CustomFlix or Amazon.com. Santa Cruz, Calif.-based CustomFlix recently launched a similar DVD on Demand service for independent filmmakers.

NBC Universal to Offer Network, Cable Shows on Comcast Video-on-Demand

Philadelphia - Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider, announced on Thursday an agreement with NBC Universal, to offer over a dozen of the company's most popular network and cable programs through Comcast's video-on-demand service. NBC primetime programs will become available as early as midnight following their on-air broadcast for 99 cents, while late-night and daytime programs will be available at no additional charge. NBC Universal programs offered on Comcast VOD will include NBC's "Law & Order," "The Office," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien"; USA Network's "Monk"; Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica"; and Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown". Comcast said that its 21.4 million cable subscribers have viewed more than 2 billion video-on-demand programs since the company launched the service in 2004.

IFC "First Take" to Offer Indie Films Simultaneously in Theaters, On-Demand

New York - IFC Entertainment, a producer and distributor of independent films, on Monday announced plans to launch a new service that will simultaneously offer critically acclaimed independent films from the festival circuit both theatrically and on-demand. Launching in March, IFC First Take plans this year to offer at least 24 films "day and date" in theaters and on its IFC cable TV channel's video-on-demand service. "We are doing more here than simply collapsing windows, IFC's First Take will serve the independent community by creating an electronic national art house for independent films," said IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring. The initial slate of features to be distributed by IFC First Take includes "CSA: The Confederate States of America," "I Am a Sex Addict," "Three Times," "American Gun" and "Sorry, Haters."

Comcast to Sell 99-Cent On-Demand Episodes of CBS Series

Philadelphia - Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider, said on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with Viacom's CBS to offer four of the network's prime-time series through its video-on-demand service. Comcast Digital Cable customers in markets with CBS owned-and-operated stations will now have access to 99-cent episodes of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "NCIS," "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race."

AOL to Offer "Earth to America" Comedy TV Special On-Demand

Dulles, Va. - America Online said on Friday that it will offer the TBS special "Earth to America," a comedy event to raise awareness for environmental issues, for free on-demand viewing on the AOL.com portal. Created by environmental activist Laurie David, the program will feature her husband, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator Larry David, in addition to Jason Alexander, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Al Franken, Steve Martin, Dustin Hoffman and many others. AOL will make the show available in chapters, and will offer additional material not seen in the television broadcast, scheduled for Nov. 20. AOL will offer the program beginning Nov. 21 through the end of 2005.

Gotuit Media Licenses KOCH Records Video for On-Demand Service

Woburn, Mass. - Gotuit Media, a provider of video-on-demand programming services, announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with independent music label KOCH Records, to offer music videos and live concert footage from KOCH artists through its Gotuit Music On Demand product. The service is offered to cable TV and broadband TV providers in the U.S. and Canada.

MusicMatch Launches On-Demand Music Service for Canadian Market

San Diego -- MusicMatch, a developer of digital music player software and distributor of digital music subscription services, announced on Tuesday the launch of its Artist On Demand subscription service in Canada. The company secured licenses to deliver songs on the service from BMG Canada, EMI Music Canada, Universal Music Canada, Warner Music Canada, and various independent labels including Anthem Records, Aquarius Records and Nettwerk Productions, as well as Quebec labels represented by the SOPROQ collection agency. The company also secured an agreement with The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. The service, which offers on-demand streaming of songs to subscribers' PCs, already claims 125,000 members in the U.S.
