U.S. Approves Mobile Digital Television Standard

Washington - The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OVMC), a group of more than 800 broadcast stations, on Thursday announced the adoption of a final mobile digital television broadcast standard by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), which should pave the way for new digital TV services on mobile phones, portable DVD players and in-car systems.

Washington is First U.S. City to Get Free Mobile TV

Washington - The Open Mobile Video Coalition, a group of companies backing mobile TV standards, have teamed with broadcasters to begin offering a test of free mobile TV broadcasts in Washington, D.C., the Associated Press reported. The local DC affiliates of CBS, NBC, PBS and Ion, along with an independent station owned by Fox will be offered for free on supported mobile devices beginning in late summer. Devices supporting the standard are made by firms including LG, Samsung, Kenwood and Dell.

Las Vegas - The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), an alliance of U.S. commercial and public broadcasters aiding the development of mobile digital television, said on Tuesday that it will test two competing technologies in 2008 that use digital broadcast TV spectrum to deliver mobile television signals.

Washington - The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), an association of television broadcasters looking to accelerate development of mobile digital broadcast TV in the U.S., announced on Tuesday that nine additional broadcast station groups have joined its ranks. New members Cox Television, Dispatch Broadcast Group, Freedom Broadcasting, LIN TV, Meredith, Media General, Post-Newsweek Stations, Raycom Media and Schurz Communications joined existing members including Belo, NBC, Tribune Fox and Gannett. The OMVC plans to develop standards, devices and business models with the goal of a 2009 launch.
