Qtrax Nearing Launch; Sued by Oracle Over $1.8M Payment

Los Angeles - Qtrax, an ad-supported download service that stirred controversy when it publicly announced licensing deals with the major labels before they had been secured, is set to announce details for its U.S. launch, the Financial Times reported. Qtrax head Alan Klepfisz wrote in a blog post that the company is "very soon going to launch a powerfully attractive music service, with leading Internet and media companies as marketing partners. That have existing substantial users. And we'll progressively roll it out throughout the world." Meanwhile, CNET News.com reports that Oracle has sued the company for bouncing a $1.8 million check for its database software.

Oracle to Acquire Sun Microsystems in Deal Worth $7.4 Billion

Redwood Shores, Calif. - In a move that caught most analysts by surprise, business software giant Oracle (NASD: ORCL) said on Monday that it will acquire Sun Microsystems (NASD: JAVA), the struggling server maker, in a deal worth $7.4 billion. IBM (NYSE: IBM) had long been considered the frontrunner to acquire Sun until last week, when talks reportedly broke down.

New York - Despite losing $18 billion in the plunging stock market, Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) founder Bill Gates leapfrogged financier Warren Buffett to claim the top spot in Forbes' newly released list of the richest people in the world.

Liberty Media Names Former Oracle President as CEO-Elect

Englewood, Colo. - Liberty Media Corporation, a holding company with interests in firms including InterActiveCorp, News Corp. and Expedia, announced on Wednesday that it has named Gregory B. Maffei as its CEO-Elect. The former president and CFO of Oracle, and former CFO at Microsoft will become CEO of Liberty Media during the second quarter of 2006. Maffei replaces John Malone, who will remain chairman, as well as Liberty president Robert Bennett, who previously announced his retirement. Colorado-based Liberty holds stakes in TV channels including Discovery Channel, USA, QVC, Encore and Starz.
