London - U.K. mobile operator O2 sold 30,000 Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhones on their first day on sale in the country, a company spokesman announced on Twitter. "Orange UK had sold more than 30k iPhones, smashing what we believe is the previously published first day sales records for a phone in the UK!," tweeted Orange's Conor Maples.

U.K.'s O2 to Allow iPhone Unlocking After Contract Expires

London - U.K. wireless carrier O2 plans to allow customers to unlock their Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhones for use on competing networks, according to an interview with CEO Matthew Key published by the Times Online. "Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honor any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator," Key told the Times. O2 competitors Orange and Vodafone are expected to offer the iPhone in the U.K.

Apple Strikes New iPhone Deals with China Unicom, Orange

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) has struck new deals with China Unicom and Orange, which will begin offering the iPhone in China and the U.K., respectively. China Unicom, the country's second-largest mobile carrier, will sell the iPhone from October with a price tag of about $732.50. Orange will join O2, which was Apple's exclusive iPhone partner in the U.K., as an iPhone distributor in the fourth quarter.

T-Mobile, Orange to Merge U.K. Operations

London - Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom announced on Tuesday that they will merge their T-Mobile UK and Orange UK units, respectively, into a new joint venture that will have a combined customer base of 28.4 million, or 37% of all U.K. mobile subscribers.

London - France Telecom's Orange said on Friday that it will do away with digital rights management (DRM) restrictions on the music sold from its Orange Music Store. The catalog will feature over 700,000 tracks from Universal Music, EMI and independent labels. The company will also introduce tiered pricing at the store, with downloads to be available from 79p ($1.28).

Orange Loses Bid to Be Exclusive iPhone Carrier in France

Paris - French mobile network operator Orange has lost a legal bid to reinstate its exclusive deal to distribute Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone in the country, Reuters reported. The Paris Appeal Court said that the deal, which gave Orange exclusive distribution rights for five years, was excessively long and could damage competition in the French mobile market. French wireless carrier Bouygues Telecom told Reuters it was in talks with Apple and expected to begin selling the iPhone itself soon.

Apple iPhone 3G Launches in India, Poland

New Delhi and Warsaw - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Friday launched its iPhone 3G in India and Poland, but while crowds lined up at midnight sales at several locations in India, Apple's Polish iPhone carrier partner, Orange, said it paid actors to create "fake queues" at 20 of its stores in the country, Reuters reported. The iPhone 3G retails for a whopping $700 in India, compared with $199 in the U.S., but Indian carrier partner Airtel told Reuters it counted more than 200,000 pre-bookings before prices were announced.

London - Six British Internet service providers have signed on to a voluntary code of conduct -- in the face of looming legislation -- that will see them send hundreds of thousands of letters to suspected illegal file-swappers and work with music and other rights holders "towards a significant reduction in illegal filesharing." U.K. ISPs Virgin Media, BSkyB, Carphone Warehouse, BT, Orange and Tiscali are party to the agreement, which came after negotiations facilitated by the U.K.'s Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), and also includes record label trade group the BPI, and the Motion Picture Association of America.

France's Orange Launches Unlimited PC/Mobile Music Service

Paris - French wireless carrier Orange on Thursday debuted Musique Max, an unlimited PC and mobile full-track download service. Featuring tracks from all four major labels and independents including Believe and Scorpio Music, the service will cost subscribers 12 euros (about $18.54) per month. Orange claims 7.5 million broadband and 7 million 3G mobile service subscribers.

Paris - Following a raft of recent announcements for further iPhone expansion plans, France-based wireless carrier Orange on Friday announced a partnership with Apple (NASD: AAPL) to launch the iPhone with its customers in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and the company's African markets later this year. The company also recently signed deals with various carriers to launch the iPhone in Canada, Latin America and other regions.

Orange Launches Trial of Ad-funded Mobile Music Service

London - European mobile network operator Orange has launched a three-month trial of its ad-supported mobile music service with 800,000 of its 15.6 million subscribers. The service will allow users to download a selection of 500 tracks for free, for half or full price. The company is working with mobile ad firm ScreenTonic, and has signed on sponsors for the trial that include Paramount Pictures and Ford.
