Los Angeles - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which organizes the Academy Awards, last week filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the owner of the website Oscarwatch.com, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Comscore released data saying that 139k people visited Oscar.com on Oscar Sunday. Seperately, Mashable reported that the Oscars asked Youtube to remove videos from the show that had been uploaded. In the same report, Mashable had a screen capture that showed that an Oscar Comedy Musical video had been viewed more than 200k times. Lets say that those 200k views translate into about 100k actual people viewing the video.

As they are for the Super Bowl, new (and pricey) commercials are synonymous with the Oscars. And in a night of varying success in that regard, the winner was Apple with its “Hello” commercial, the first iPhone television ad. What separated it from other Apple launches was the element of surprise; the viewer didn’t know the ad’s product until the end, when the iPhone appeared. But it did so without showing the Apple logo and the iPhone name, the message being: You already know this phone’s name and the company that makes it. And they were right.

Los Angeles - Motorola announced on Friday that it will debut its new MOTORIZR Z3 mobile phone at the 79th Annual Academy Awards, when it presents each of the top 25 nominees in the directing and four acting categories with the phone. The handsets will be housed in custom made boxes, and will come pre-loaded with 10 new songs from emerging artists. The Los Angeles Times yesterday launched an online voting pool for the Grammys and Golden Globes titled The Road To Gold. The interactive feature allows awards enthusiasts to test their “insider” knowledge against actual award voters and other online participants. In addition, private pools can be created for friends, family and coworkers. An Oscar-oriented game will launch once the Academy Awards nominations have been announced on January 23rd. Participants can fill out a ballot to vote for their favorite movie, TV and music nominees by logging onto The Envelope.
