PandoraGoogle Debuts Music Search Feature with Lala, iLikeAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 29, 2009 - 8:11am.
Mountain View,
Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) announced on Wednesday
the launch of a new music-focused search feature, "OneBox," which
adds streaming songs via Lala and MySpace's (NYSE: NWS) iLike, along with links to an
artist's website. Along with Lala and iLike, Google will also include links to
digital music services Pandora, imeem and Rhapsody (NASD: RNWK). The feature will in many
cases allow users to listen to the full song they are searching for right there
from the search results page; licensing issues mean that some songs will only
feature 30-second samples, and that subsequent searches after a song is streamed
in full once will only provide a 30-second sample.

Pandora Comments on New Submission RequirementAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 1, 2009 - 9:27am.
San Francisco
- Tim Westergren, founder and CEO of streaming music service Pandora, has
responded to complaints about the company's new requirement that independent
artists first list a CD for sale on Amazon before they are eligible for play on
Pandora, Hypebot reports. Westergren chalked the move up to three reasons:
"user experience, improving the metadata, and managing submissions."
"We are huge believers in not discriminating against aspiring/emerging
artists -- 70% of the 75,000 artists in our collection are not on a major
label," Westergren told Hypebot. "All we're asking of artists is to
make great music, and have it available for easy purchase for Pandora's
audience."

Hypebot reported. Submissions must be available as a physical CD, and include
cover art and a UPC code, in part due to a deal to display album art on Pandora
via Amazon's servers. Artists are also encouraged to joint the Amazon Advantage
Program, which costs $29.95 per year and gives Amazon a 55% cut of profits from
CD sales.

In this interview, Westergren talks about Pandora's iPhone App having had a surprisingly positive effect on subscriber growth and clears up some of the confusion in the blogosphere resulting from a post on Distorted-Loop claiming that "iPhone accounts for almost half of Pandora’s 17 million members." What Westergren actually said is that the iPhone App has doubled Pandora's growth rate from 20,000 to 40,000+ new users each day. Currently, Pandora has about 1.5 million iPhone users.
