Viacom to Launch Pay-TV, VOD Channel JV with 5 Studios

New York - Media conglomerate Viacom (NYSE: VIA) announced on Monday that it has formed a joint venture to create a premium TV channel and video-on-demand service that will feature classic and new movies and TV shows from five studios. Scheduled to launch in the fall of 2009, the service will feature programming from Viacom's Paramount and Paramount Vantage, MGM, United Artists and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF).

Access IT, Studios to Add 10,000 Digital Cinema Screens

Morristown, N.J. - Access Integrated Technologies (Access IT) (NASD: AIXD), a provider of digital cinema projection systems for movie theaters, announced on Tuesday a massive deal with four major movies studios, to provide movies to up to 10,000 digital cinema systems in the U.S. and Canada.

Paramount Announces Q1 HD DVD Release Slate

Hollywood, Calif. - Confirming its support for Toshiba's HD DVD format in the wake of Warner Bros. defection to Sony's rival Blu-ray format, Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount Home Entertainment on Thursday announced its slate of HD DVD releases for the first quarter. The will include "Zodiac," "Beowulf," "Into the Wild" and "The Kite Runner." Viacom's DreamWorks Animation also remains committed to HD DVD, and will offer "Bee Movie" in March.

Paramount Releasing ‘Jackass 2.5’ Free on the Web

If a studio is going to experiment with the launch of a major motion picture on the internet, the Jackass franchise is probably a smart bet. The Hollywood Reporter said today that Paramount Digital Entertainment and MTV New Media, co-producers on Jackass 2.5, will release the film at blockbuster.jackass.com, skipping theaters entirely in a rare move for a franchise that has already had two box office hits.

Paramount Taps Hungama Mobile for Promotions in India

Singapore - Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount Digital Entertainment unit has partnered with Hungama Mobile to develop and distribute mobile content for Paramount titles in India, Variety reports. The mobile content will be released to promote Paramount's theatrical releases in the country. "This deal is really all about synergy and having Hungama Mobile do for us what they do for Bollywood releases," Paramount Digital Entertainment VP, Interactive and Mobile Entertainment, Asia Pacific, Pradeep Mittur, told Variety. "At this stage, this relationship is more about promotion of our movies, than trying to develop a new revenue stream."

VUDU Adds HD Movies to VOD Set-top Box

Santa Clara, Calif. - VUDU, the developer of a set-top box that features on-demand movies licensed from the major studios and many independents, announced on Thursday that it has signed deals with Universal, Paramount and Lionsgate to add HD movies to its service. The HD films will be available to VUDU owners during the traditional home video and video-on-demand windows. Santa Clara, Calif.-based VUDU's Internet-connected set-top box went on sale last month for $399; consumers also pay fees to rent or permanently purchase titles from the rotating library of 5,000 films.

Los Angeles - Looking to offer a relatively cheap alternative in China, the world's largest pirate DVD market, Hollywood movie studios Warner Bros. (NYSE: TW) and Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount and DreamWorks have partnered to sell new DVDs for $2.95 there as soon as two months after a film's U.S. premiere, Variety reported.

Los Angeles - Vivendi's Sierra Entertainment announced on Thursday that it will publish "The Spiderwick Chronicles," a game based on the best-selling book series and forthcoming film from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films. The title is currently in development at Stormfront Studios for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and the PC for release in February 2008.

The presidents of the six major movie studios' home entertainment divisions participated in a panel discussion at the DVD&Beyond Conference in Los Angeles on Monday. The topic was the state of the industry and their respective visions for the future. What struck me is that there was very little discussion of new growth opportunities, even though most of the studio executives on the panel recognized that their divisions were looking at flat or negative growth for 2007.

Paramount Taps Eyespot for Movie Trailer Mash-up Software

San Diego - Eyespot, a provider of online video editing software, said on Wednesday that Paramount pictures is using its technology to allow film fans to create their own movie trailer mash-ups. The first title under the agreement is the upcoming film, "Shooter." More than 20 clips from the movie, as well as its official trailer, still photos, sound effects and music from the original score will be made available online to Eyespot users.

Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone wants to be friends with Tom Cruise again and says that he never fired him from Paramount to People Magazine: "What happened was, I just gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal. In the course of it, they asked me what was going on. I said, you know, he would no longer be in the lot. They treated that like I was firing him. I didn't fire him! I had nothing to do with it. But they treated it explosively. And I didn't like it."

Paramount's "Beowulf" to Screen in 3D Using Real D Technology

Hollywood - Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that director Robert Zemeckis' live-action film version of "Beowulf" will be offered in 3D in select theaters on the same day of its 35mm release. The film will be presented using Real D's digital 3D projectors.

AOL Video Adds Downloadable Movies from Paramount Pictures

Dulles, Va. - AOL announced on Monday that it has added films and TV shows from Viacom's Paramount Pictures to the offering on its AOL Video portal. New releases, TV specials, library hits and cult favorites will be available for download for between $9.99 and $19.99 per movie. AOL also said it added content from BlueHighways TV, The Employment & Careers Channel, The Hip Hop Hall of Fame, MyPath TV and Plum to AOL Video, which features over 50 video-on-demand channels that combine free and download-to-own programming.

Los Angeles - Viacom's Paramount Home Entertainment announced this week that it will release "Mission: Impossible III" simultaneously on DVD and the dueling HD DVD and Blu-ray next-generation DVD formats on Oct. 30, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Technorati, Paramount Classics to Promote Films on Blogs

San Francisco - Technorati, a site that tracks and aggregates news from over 39 million blogs, announced this week that it partnered with Paramount Classics to promote upcoming films. The studio plans to create a page on each of its film sites that features up-to-the-minute blog posts about the film, provided through Technorati, and will place movie ads on Technorati.com and its partner sites. Technorati will also enable its blogs to syndicate live content from the producers of Paramount films. The first title under the agreement will be "An Inconvenient Truth," starring former Vice President Al Gore.

Kodak Handles Digital Cinema Distribution for "Mission Impossible: III"

Hollywood - Paramount Pictures said on Monday that it partnered with Kodak Digital Cinema to handle the preparation and distribution of its "Mission Impossible: III" to more than 170 digital cinema screens in North America. Paramount said the film is now playing on more than a third of all digital-equipped screens in North America.
