Youth Virtual Mobile Network Helio Partners with MySpace

Los Angeles - Helio, a new youth-focused mobile network operator joint venture between EarthLink and South Korea's SK Telecom, announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with MySpace, News Corp.'s social-networking site with 55 million members. The MySpace Mobile service will let Helio subscribers view MySpace profiles and photos, blog, send and receive MySpace messages, and post photos taken with Helio phones directly onto MySpace. The Wall Street Journal reported that Helio, set to launch in the U.S. in the spring, will receive $440 million in funding from its backers. The company's first two handsets -- the "Hero" made by Pantech and "Kickflip" made by VK Mobile -- were introduced on Thursday.

European Wireless Operator Vodafone, Google Partner on Mobile Search

London - European mobile network operator Vodafone announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Google to develop mobile search services. Vodafone, which counts 179 million customers across 31 countries, plans to integrate Google search into its Vodafone live 3G consumer service, and share in search ad revenue generated by Google mobile searches.

PodShow, Limelight Networks Partner on Podcast Delivery Network

San Francisco - PodShow, a provider of podcast creation and distribution software, said on Tuesday that it has partnered with content delivery network provider Limelight Networks to launch PodShowPDN, an accelerated delivery network for podcasts. The companies said PodShowPDN can be used to manage, deliver and track tens of thousands of shows, millions of episodes and hundreds of millions of downloads.

Nokia, Sony Ericsson Partner on Mobile TV

Barcelona - Mobile phone makers Nokia and Sony Ericsson on Monday announced plans to make their mobile TV handsets and services interoperable from 2006 onwards. The companies will both use the DVB-H mobile TV standard, and work together to launch mobile TV services and pilots from multiple vendors, using the Open Air Interface guidelines. "Availability of interoperable DVB-H enabled mobile devices is crucial in opening up the mass market for broadcast mobile TV," said Ilkka Raiskinen, senior vice president for multimedia experiences at Nokia.

Openwave, Sun Microsystems Partner on Mobile Media

Barcelona - Openwave Systems announced on Monday that it has partnered with Sun Microsystems, to integrate its MIDAS media software for cell phones with Sun's cell phone version of its Java technology. The companies said the combined technologies will allow for more personalization on cell phones beyond ringtones and traditional applications, integrating music libraries, music store and music player applications. Separately, Openwave said it partnered with mobile TV providers IceTV and Nexage, to enable mobile network operators to provide mobile live TV and video-on-demand on cell phones running its MIDAS software. The company also said that its Musiwave unit has launched a trial of its mobile streaming radio service with wireless network operator Orange in France.

MobiTV, IPWireless Partner to Develop Mobile TV Multicasting

Emeryville, Calif. - MobiTV, a developer of technology that delivers live television to mobile phones, announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with IPWireless to jointly develop mobile TV technology that combines MobiTV's "unicast" method with the TDtv "multicasting" technology developed by IPWireless. The multicast technology will alleviate strain on networks unicasting mobile TV in areas where large numbers of phones are accessing the same channel; multicasting allows an infinite number of phones to watch the same channel or use the same network bandwidth. MobiTV and IPWireless will test the delivery MobiTV over TDtv during the first half of 2006, with commercial roll-out of TDtv networks expected by mid-2007. Emeryville, Calif.-based MobiTV currently claims over 500,000 subscribers to its service, which is offered by mobile networks including Sprint and Cingular.

WSI, Sirius Partner to Develop In-Flight Satellite Radio

Andover, Mass. - WSI Corporation announced on Wednesday that it is developing a system that will enable aircraft to receive its aviation weather information over Sirius Satellite Radio. Expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2006, the WSI InFlight service will also enable passengers to listen to Sirius radio programming.

Live Nation, Nokia Partner on U.K. Mobile Concert Ticket Service

London - Live Nation, a global concert promoter and owner of 150 venues, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Nokia to launch TicketRush.co.uk, an online store that will promote and sell tickets to concerts, events and festivals. The service promises to offer early access to tickets to some events, as well as the ability to purchase last minute tickets to sold out shows. The company said it will add the ability for users to purchase tickets directly from cell phones over the next few months.

Showtime, FanLib Partner on "The L Word" Fan Script Collaboration

Los Angeles - Showtime Networks on Wednesday announced a collaborative writing event with fans of its "The L Word" series, encouraging them to submit original scenes based on a "scene mission" posted by one of the show's writers. The online community will then vote, with the most popular submission to be added to the script in progress. Showtime partnered with FanLib on the project; the company will produce an eZine featuring the collaborative script and other items that can be downloaded by fans.
