RED to Launch Music Subscription Service for AIDS Charity

New York - (RED), the nonprofit campaign spearheaded by U2 frontman Bono whose goal is to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, announced on Monday that it plans to launch a $5-per-month digital music subscription service that will help fund its efforts. Powered by PassAlong Networks, the service will each week receive one new exclusive song from a top artist; one song by an emerging talent; a "Crackerjack surprise," such as a music video; and stores describing details of (RED) dollars being put to work in Africa.

PassAlong Networks Spins Off Speakerheart Indie Publishing Unit

Franklin, Tenn. - PassAlong Networks, a provider of branded digital music stores, announced on Wednesday that it has spun off its Speakerheart digital music store service for independent artists. The software enables artists to upload their own music, create track samples, set their own prices and sell their music via both custom storefronts and an embeddable widget tool called Shelves. PassAlong co-founders Jozef Nuyens and Brad Edmonson were named CEO and president, respectively, of Speakerheart.

PassAlong Networks to Distribute CinemaNow Video Content

Franklin, Tenn. - PassAlong Networks, a provider of branded digital media download stores, on Tuesday announced a deal with downloadable video retailer CinemaNow that will make more than 7,000 movies and music videos from CinemaNow available to PassAlong clients. Tennessee-based PassAlong powers over 120 online download stores, for clients including TransWorld's f.y.e., and BreakthruRadio.

EMI Adds DRM-Free MP3s to PassAlong Networks Online Stores

London - Major record label EMI has signed another deal to distribute digital tracks from from digital rights management (DRM) restrictions, this time with Tennessee-based PassAlong Networks. Under the deal, online music stores powered by PassAlong's StoreBlocks technology -- such as Trans World Entertainment's f.y.e. -- will offer EMI tracks as 320Kbps MP3s.

Franklin, Tenn. - Digital music retailer PassAlong Networks announced that it has partnered with song ID service Gracenote and MP3Car.com on a service that will let consumers download songs directly to their car stereos. MP3Car.com's service, which also offers Yahoo's Launchast radio, will launch a digital music store powered by PassAlong's StoreBlocks platform.

Amazon.com today announced that they will be launching a digital music store that will only sell DRM-free MP3 music files. Buyers will know that once they buy the music, they own the music and are free to use it on anything, anywhere for personal use. Amazon’s decision to sell only DRM-free music is a powerful statement against the use of DRM restrictions by the major labels and it shows that one of the most powerful online stores believe that a digital music business can be built using only DRM-free products.
