PBS, NPR Stations Debut Forum Network Lecture Site

Boston - PBS, NPR and WGBH on Tuesday re-launched the Forum Network, a national digital media lecture service and website that provides free educational content featuring thinkers, scientists, policymakers, artists, authors and community leaders. The site began as part of Boston's WGBH, but through funding from PBS, NPR, CPB and the Lowell Institute, was re-launched as a national platform.

PlaySpan Brings Virtual Goods Marketplaces to Social Networks

Santa Clara, Calif. - PlaySpan, a provider of micropayment transaction services for more than 1,000 virtual worlds and online games, plans to launch marketplaces on social networks Facebook and MySpace. The marketplaces will allow users to purchase online game items, virtual goods and game currencies. The company also recently announced a partnership with PBS, to sell online gift cards for PBS Kids Play online educational content at 800 Toys 'R' Us Stores.

PBS Launches Video Portal With Full-Length Programs

Arlington, Va. - PBS, the public broadcasting entity with 357 member stations, on Wednesday announced the beta launch of its new video portal, which will bring thousands of hours of national and local PBS programming to the Web, and ultimately include feature-length films and documentaries, as well as live events and performances.

CBS Signs Partners to Add More TV Episodes to TV.com

New York - CBS (NYSE: CBS) Interactive announced on Monday that it has signed deals with MGM, Showtime, Sony Pictures Television, PBS and Endemol USA to expand the range of TV episodes available for free streaming on its TV.com website.

PBS Beats Out Commercial Networks on Web

Arlington, Va. - The web site of Arlington-based PBS outdrew all commercial broadcast network sites in 2008, according to new figures from Internet measurement service Hitwise. PBS.org received a larger percentage share of U.S. visits more often than any network site, ranking No. 1 among those sites for 19 weeks.

YouTube, PBS Ask Users to "Video Your Vote" at the Polls

San Bruno, Calif. - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube and PBS on Wednesday launched "Video Your Vote," a project that asks users to document their voting experience on Election Day. "We're looking for for perspectives from polling places across the country that chronicle the excitement and energy at the polls, as well as any problems that may arise -- like long lines or broken voting machines -- that could prevent citizens from exercising their right to vote," YouTube head of news & politics Steve Grove wrote in a blog post. Some of the videos taken will be featured on PBS' "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."

PBS Adds Downloadable TV Shows to Xbox Live

Arlington, Va. - PBS said on Tuesday that it will make several of its television shows available for download on Xbox LIVE, the online games and entertainment network of the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. Available shows will include Wired Science, Carrier, Scientific American Frontiers, Nova, and Ken Burns' Jazz, America and American Lives.

PBS Launches "Vote 2008" Site

Arlington, Va. - PBS said that it has launched its new presidential election site, called Vote 2008. The site features a variety of news stories, video, online tools and user comments from public television and public radio sites across the nation. It also includes several social media widgets, a video player, a blog and an interactive election map produced in conjunction with National Public Radio (NPR).

Visits to PBS.org Grow 25%; Site Finishes Third Among Networks

Arlington, Va. - PBS.org, the website of PBS, saw a 25% jump in site visits during the 2007-08 television season, compared with the prior year, according to new statistics released by Internet measurement service Hitwise. The site, in fact, finished third among the six commercial broadcast network web sites, drawing 18.9% of U.S. visits to trail only ABC and NBC. It led all six in visits for the weeks ending May 31, June 7, 14 and 21.

PBS Launches Internet Service for Kids

Arlington, Va. - Following two months of testing, PBS on Tuesday launched "PBS Kids Play," a subscription Internet service designed to help children ages 3-6 learn through interactive games.

iTunes U to Feature Free Educational Content from PBS, WETA

Arlington, Va. - PBS said on Wednesday that much of its programming is now available for free on iTunes U, a dedicated area of Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store showcasing educational content. The content, which includes educational video clips, lectures, interviews, teachers' guides and a variety of other materials, is available in the Beyond Campus section of iTunes U.

PBS Launches Beta of Educational Virtual World for Kids

Arlington, Va. - PBS on Tuesday launched a beta test of PBS Kids Play, its new educational virtual world targeted at children ages 3-6. The broadband, ad-free subscription service will cost $9.95 a month, or $79 annually, and offer games and activities that feature characters from PBS shows like "Curious George," "The Berenstain Bears" and "Mister Rogers."

Adobe Systems Provides $1 Million Grant to PBS

San Jose, Calif. - Adobe Systems (NASD: ADBE), the developer of Web publishing software, said on Monday that its philanthropic arm, the Adobe Foundation Fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, has awarded $1 million to the PBS Foundation. The grant will establish PBS's Adobe Youth Voices Venture Fund, which will help support professional and student producers in creating broadcast programming focused on youth-related subject matter, and also incorporate youth-generated video, animation and photography into public television broadcasts and websites.

PBS Adds Programs to Joost Internet TV Service

Arlington, Va. - PBS announced on Tuesday that it will begin offering full-length programming on Joost, the Internet-based television service. At launch, PBS will offer programs including "History Detectives" and "Scientific American Frontiers," as well as specials from its "Empires" collection.
