Palo Alto, Calif. - Peerflix, the provider of an online DVD trading service, has announced that it will shut down its swapping service, while continuing to maintain its vertical online ad network for movie fans, according to an e-mail sent to users.

Menlo Park, Calif. - Peerflix, an online service that facilitates the trading of DVDs among its members, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $8 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Battery Ventures led the investment round, which also included follow-on investments from 3i and BV Capital. Launched in September, Menlo Park, Calif.-based Peerflix says its members are now offering over 100,000 DVDs for trade on its network, which charges members 99 cents for each DVD they trade directly with another member through the U.S. mail. The company will use the funds to develop new product offerings, scale its infrastructure and expand service to more North American customers.

Menlo Park, Calif. -- After a year-long beta test, Peerflix on Monday launched its online DVD trading service, which facilitates the trading of DVDs among members through the mail. The company charges 99 cents per trade, and enables users to print out their own DVD mailers; the U.S. Postal Service enables online tracking of lent DVD titles. An internal currency assigns a value to each DVD title, ensuring an "even trade" among members. Peerflix members currently offer a combined library of more than 65,000 DVD titles, with members registered in all 50 states and most Canadian provinces.

DVD Trading Service Peerflix Lands First Round of Funding

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Peerflix, an online service that allows members to legally trade DVDs, said on Tuesday that it has raised an unspecified amount in its first round of funding, co-led by 3i and BV Capital. The funding will be used to accelerate member acquisition, scale the company's infrastructure and develop new product offerings and enhancements. Launched in 2004, Peerflix operates a peer-to-peer service that allows DVD owners to trade DVDs that they no longer want for others they would like to watch. The company said that more than 25,000 are currently being requested for trade on its site, with plans to expand into other products, including video games and CDs. The service, still in its beta phase, is currently offered in the U.S. and Canada, with international expansion planned for the future.
