Mobile Phone Penetration in European Union Surpasses 80%

Brussels -- The EU currently boasts more than 300 million mobile-phone users, which pushes mobile penetration in the 15-member bloc to more than 80%, the Financial Times reported this week. The EU said that the figures reflect a broad recovery in European electronic communications market. Broadband services and digital TV services are also growing rapidly, according to the preliminary EU report. The EC will present the data officially to EU ministers next week during its report on the European telecommunications market.

Report: U.S. Cell Phone Penetration Reaches 53%

San Francisco. -- A new report by Telephia, a San Francisco-based provider of mobile communications market research, found that 53 percent of residents in 44 major U.S. markets now have mobile phone service. Greenville, S.C. has the highest rate of market penetration, with 71 percent of residents subscribing to a mobile phone service. St. Louis (69 percent), Raleigh, N.C. and Orlando (65 percent), and Atlanta and Washington, DC (64 percent) round out the top five.
