Authored by Mark Hefflinger on August 9, 2007 - 4:00pm.

Los Angeles - AT&T censored portions of Pearl Jam's performance from its live webcast of the Lollapalooza music festival this weekend, which the company later said was a mistake and promised to repost the performance in its entirety, according to reports. Removed was a portion of one song where the band segued into Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall," when singer Eddie Vedder improvised the lyrics, "George Bush, leave this world alone," and, "George Bush, find yourself another home." AT&T told Billboard the incident was "a mistake by a Webcast vendor," adding, "We have policies in place with respect to editing excessive profanity, but AT&T does not censor performances. We very much regret that this happened in the first place."

Interesting Results from Pearl Jam’s Copyright Experiment

Authored by Jay Baage on July 6, 2006 - 8:39am.

After a six years sales decline and negative PR surrounding lawsuits against 15,000 individuals, a recent experiment by Pearl Jam offers a glimmer of hope that major record labels and their customers may be reconciling.

Nielsen SoundScan figures through the week ending July 2 show that sales of digital albums soared 126% during the first half of the year, while digital tracks rose 77%. This does not make up for the decline in physical album sales, but it shows that the prospect of getting paid for music online, despite of P2P? services offering the same pirated albums and tracks for free, is not that far-fetched after all.

New York -- The rock band Pearl Jam announced that it plans to begin offering high-quality, unprotected downloads of recordings from live concerts on its upcoming tour for $9.99, beginning on Sept. 1. The "digital bootlegs" will be mixed in real-time by Pearl Jam engineer Brett Eliason, whose Basecamp Productions will also provide the software that delivers and manages the downloads. Along with a 192kbps MP3 file of each performance, the bootlegs will include downloadable artwork, and a slideshow of photos taken during each particular show. The band has also in the past offered live CD recordings from every show on its 2002 and 2003 tours. "A lot of the band's fans want to own a copy of the live show they saw in their hometown, or a particularly standout show they hear about from other fans," said Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis. "Making the bootlegs available in digital form is just a natural evolution for the bootleg CD program, and a response to more and more fans turning to the web to buy their music."

Pearl Jam to Offer MP3 Downloads of Concerts "Hours" After Completion

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on January 29, 2003 - 4:32am.
New York -- Epic Records recording artists Pearl Jam announced on Wednesday that they will release live bootleg albums for each of the 47 shows of its 2003 Riot Act tour, in part to counter the trading of the band's songs and live shows on file-sharing services. The bootlegs will only be available for purchase online, unlike a similar promotion in 2000 when concert bootlegs were also sold in retail stores. The band will also offer those who purchase any bootleg a free MP3 download of that entire show -- "within hours of the show's real-time completion." "We wanted to provide fans with a souvenir of the show they experienced immediately following the show -- this comes pretty close," said Tim Bierman, Pearl Jam's 10-club manager.
