iPhone Repositioned for Onslaught of Touchscreen AlternativesAuthored by Scott Goldberg on September 13, 2007 - 6:09am.
“If you build it, they will come.” So true, Kevin Costner. So true. But in 2007 the “it” is the iPhone, and “they” are every other phone manufacturer in the world. To no surprise the iPhone has spawned imitators, even from the fashion industry. Apple has somehow positioned itself as both a technology and fashion accessory company, this we already know. But now the traditional fashion companies are feeling the heat and sensing the opportunity, throwing their own recognizable brands in the mix. The latest is Armani, who has attached its name to the new Samsung P520, much the way Prada paired with LG for the KE850.
So what if Nokia is Remaking Apple's iPhone?Authored by Scott Goldberg on August 30, 2007 - 10:15am.
A YouTube video demonstrating Nokia’s new phone is flying around the internet right now, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a spoof on the iPhone (see it here). No, it’s the real thing, and it looks awfully similar to Apple’s. But so what? It seems like a reasonable idea, especially if the iPhone really is the future. Shouldn’t everyone else get on board? In fact it’s really a page right out of Apple’s book. Steve Jobs didn’t invent the MP3 player, after all, he merely perfected it.

Los Angeles - The producers of the ABC TV drama "Lost" plan to offer a spin-off of the show, "Lost Video Diaries," that will be distributed exclusively to video-capable cell phones early next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Lost" executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse will handle production of 20 "mobisodes," set to begin shooting next month, without involvement from ABC or Touchstone Television. The spin-off will introduce two new characters not featured in the TV series. While no carrier partner has been announced, Verizon this week began offering several mobile applications based on content from "Lost" and ABC's "Desperate Housewives." ABC also recently began selling 99-cent full episodes of the two series for download to iPods, PCs and other devices, through Apple's iTunes Store.
Motorola Plans New Rokr Music Phones in 2006Authored by Mark Hefflinger on November 18, 2005 - 3:17am.
New York - Motorola said this week that it plans to release several new handsets in its music-playing Rokr cell phone line next year, Reuters reported. Motorola's first Rokr phone that integrated iTunes software, which was not as thin and sleek as its Razr model, has seen sluggish sales. The company said new Rokr models will be closer in design to the Razr; the first is slated for release in the first quarter, while another to be introduced mid-year will offer wireless song downloads, according to Ron Garriques, head of Motorola's mobile unit. Carriers will also be given the choice to include either iTunes or any competing player software on the phones.
Survey: Only 4% of Brits Plan to Upgrade Phones to 3GAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 8, 2005 - 3:03am.
London -- According to a new survey commissioned by Netonomy and conducted by YouGov, 3G telephony has left most U.K. consumers simply confused. In fact, only 4% of those surveyed said they were planning to upgrade their existing mobile phones to 3G handsets, which will enable a new wave of wireless multimedia services for music, movies and games. The majority of respondents said they felt there were too many features on 3G handsets, not to mention too many ways to pay for them. "The concern is that if they do not make it simple and less frightening for consumers it may impact the growth of 3G," said Netonomy co-founder John Hughes, who added that most operators were doing a very poor job of informing customers about their options. To date, 3 UK, Vodafone, Orange and O2 have launched 3G networks in the U.K. T-Mobile is expected to follow suit later this year.
New Motorola Phones to Feature Apple iTunes SoftwareAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 27, 2004 - 4:28am.
Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Motorola to develop a new iTunes mobile music player to be incorporated into Motorola cell phones. The technology, expected to be available on phones released in the first half of 2005, will allow users to transfer iTunes songs from their Mac or PC to the phone via a USB or Bluetooth wireless connection. "Being able to transfer songs you've purchased from iTunes to Motorola mobile handsets expands the market reach for both of us and drives new revenue for customers, delivering an amazing music experience to millions of wireless users," said Motorola chairman and CEO Ed Zander. The companies did not release details on specific features of either the stripped-down version of iTunes or the new handsets, including how many songs the phones will be able to store.
Fidelity Restriction Talks Delay Sale of Samsung MP3 Phones in KoreaAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on March 31, 2004 - 3:47am.
Seoul -- The Korea Herald reported on Wednesday that the Korean recording industry is demanding that cell phones that can download and play MP3 music files support only radio-quality sound, to deter potential piracy. Bowing to pressure from groups including the Korea Association of Phonogram Producers and Korea Music Copyright Association, Samsung decided to delay release of its MP3 Anycall handset this week while it negotiates with the Korean record industry over degrading the sound quality of recordings to below 96 kbps. "Our industry has been in a nose-dive since the release of MP3 players in 2000. At that time, we felt hopeless because Korean people were insensitive to copyright issues and we did not have any unified organization that could cope with the situation," Yoon Seong-woo, a director of the Korea Association of Phonogram Producers, told The Korea Herald. "Because the MP3 phone market is big enough to destroy the music industry, we're struggling to defend it."
Nokia Reports 400,000 N-Gage Video Game Phones Sold in 2 WeeksAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 22, 2003 - 6:07am.
Helsinki, Finland -- Cell phone maker Nokia on Wednesday said that it has sold 400,000 of its N-Gage hybrid cell phone/handheld video game in the device's first two weeks of availability. Nokia said that sales have been strongest in Europe and Asia, and that males in their 20s and 30s have thus far been the primary N-Gage purchasers. The company also said that its N-Gage Arena, an online multiplayer community for owners of the device, is now averaging 5,000 sessions daily. "For a global number it's not a huge quantity," Harris Nesbitt Gerard financial analyst Edward Williams told Reuters. "Their market is going to be best in regions like Europe and Asia where sales to consumers is strong. In the United States, Nokia will still need to address issues such as the high price."

Gartner Dataquest: Global Mobile Phone Sales Up 6% In 2002Authored by Mark Hefflinger on March 10, 2003 - 6:14am.
London -- Worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 423.4 million units in 2002, a 6 percent increase from 2001, according to research group Gartner Dataquest. "Consumers embraced a variety of innovative handsets, especially those with color screens, rather than delaying replacement purchases because of an ongoing lack of compelling mobile data services," according to Gartner Dataquest analyst Bryan Prohm. Nokia was the leading supplier of mobile phones, with 35.8 percent of the global market, followed by Motorola and Samsung. http://biz.yahoo.com/djus/030310/0700000621_1.html
