San Francisco - PlanetOut, a media firm focused on the LGBT community, has laid off at least a third of its staff, CNET News.com reported, citing a PlanetOut contractor and a former employee.

San Francisco - Following months of financial struggles, PlanetOut, the San Francisco-based media and entertainment firm focused on the gay and lesbian market, said that it has signed a deal to merge with Regent Media, the Los Angeles-based owner of gay-focused cable network Here Networks.

Los Angeles - Mark Elderkin, the founder of Gay.com and former president of gay media company PlanetOut, has launched the Gay Ad Network, a vertical online advertising network comprised of over 200 websites targeting the LGBT community. Launch partners include local gay newspapers, national gay magazines, gay content websites and gay social networking services, such as the Washington Blade; Genre Magazine; OutSports; Connexion.org; TheLWordOnline.com; and ProudParenting.com. The company will use online ad firm Adify's self-service ad platform for its offering.

San Francisco - Gay media company PlanetOut announced on Thursday that it will close its international offices in Buenos Aires and London. The struggling San Francisco-based company last week raised $26.2 million in new financing, up against a deadline to raise funds to pay off existing loans. "While we plan to continue serving our global audience, we made this decision to streamline our business operations and reduce expenses," said PlanetOut CEO Karen Magee.

San Francisco - Gay magazine publisher PlanetOut, whose publications include The Advocate and Out, on Tuesday announced the launch of a new digital delivery system that will give subscribers the additional option of receiving magazine issues electronically. The company did not name a distribution partner, but said the digital versions are identical to the print editions and are viewable with a free player.

San Francisco - PlanetOut, a gay-focused media company that owns Gay.com and publishes the magazines Out and The Advocate, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired RSVP Productions, a marketer of gay and lesbian travel events, for $6.5 million in cash plus up to $3 million in additional considerations. Minnesota-based RSVP posted $7.2 million in revenue in 2004 and $8.3 million in revenue for the first nine months of 2005.

San Francisco - PlanetOut, a media and entertainment company focused on the gay community, announced on Thursday that it has acquired the assets of LPI Media -- publisher of gay magazines OUT and The Advocate -- for $31.1 million. San Francisco-based PlanetOut's media properties include Gay.com, PlanetOut.com and Kleptomaniac.com. LPI Media, whose magazines have a combined circulation of 8 million, expects 2005 revenues of approximately $29 million. PlanetOut said that, for the first nine months of 2005, the combined company would have derived 41% of revenue from advertising, 45% from subscriptions and 14% from transaction services, adding that the acquisition will likely nearly double its estimated 2005 annual revenue. "This transaction will further advance our strategy of building a far-reaching media and entertainment company which aggregates the largest gay and lesbian media brands," said PlanetOut chairman and CEO Lowell Selvin. "This combination provides a larger, more diverse foundation for additional growth, particularly in our advertising business, as it becomes a larger percentage of our overall revenue, and it enables us to better reach the markets we serve, driving higher growth in a more cost-effective manner."

PlanetOut Launches Video-on-Demand With Sundance Doc Series

San Francisco -- PlanetOut, an online media company focused on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, on Wednesday announced plans to launch a broadband Internet video-on-demand service with programming from TV networks, movie studios and its online community of 5 million members. PlanetOut Video will offer content from partners including Sundance Channel, which will premiere the first episode of its 8-pary documentary series on gender reassignment, "TransGeneration," on the service before it airs on Sundance and MTV's Logo in September. PlanetOut Video will also offer a Gay TV Guide for locating LGBT-related cable and network TV programs. The company will add member-generated video content to the service in 2006. "We believe that PlanetOut Video will allow us to establish relationships with a wider range of advertisers, such as movie studios, TV networks, and Fortune 500 advertisers wanting to engage the gay market through video and thirty-second ad spots," said PlanetOut president Mark Elderkin.
