Sony: PlayStation Network Hits 500 Million Downloads

Los Angeles - Sony (NYSE: SNE) has distributed more than 500 million pieces of content to PlayStation 3 and PSP owners via its PlayStation Network over the past year, Variety reports. The service, which now counts over 25 million registered users, offers a selection of 2,000 movies and 10,200 TV episodes from 38 content partners, including all the major movie studios. About 35% of movies are available in HD on the PlayStation Network.

Sony Adds Publisher Bandwidth Fees to PlayStation Network

New York - Sony (NYSE: SNE) has started charging game developers and publishers for the bandwidth used to deliver their game demos and downloads via its PlayStation Network for the PS3, according to MTV's Multiplayer blog.

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment said on Wednesday that its PlayStation Network online game service now counts over 20 million registered users worldwide, and has generated more than $180 million in sales since its launch just over two years ago. The PlayStation Network now offers more than 14,500 pieces of digital content, including over 5,900 movies and television episodes. Sony added that its PlayStation Home virtual world now claims over 4 million users.

Los Angeles - Sony Computer Entertainment America (NYSE: SNE) on Wednesday announced the launch of its long-awaited movie and TV download service for the PlayStation 3 and PSP handheld in the U.S., which will initially offer around 300 films and 1,200 TV episodes in both standard and high-definition from partners including Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox (NYSE: NWS), Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount (NYSE: VIA), Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX) and Disney (NYSE: DIS). Rentals on the PlayStation Network will cost between $2.99 and $5.99 for movies and $1.99 for TV episodes; purchased movies will cost from $9.99 to $14.99.
