PurePlay Raises Funding for Legal U.S. Poker Site

San Francisco - PurePlay, an online poker site that allows users to play for cash and claims to be compliant with U.S. laws, announced on Tuesday that it has raised a third round of venture capital, led by Bay Partners, with total funding to date now at $15 million.

Waltham, Mass. Web portal Lycos announced on Wednesday that "poker" was the top search term on its service during 2006. The top 10 queries from the company's annual Lycos 50 list of the most popular people, places and things searched for on its service also included "MySpace," "RuneScape," "Pamela Anderson" and "Paris Hilton." Clay Aiken was the most-searched man on Lycos during 2006.

Skill Games Site Closes to Americans Following 'Net Gambling Ban

London - GameAccount, a provider of person-to-person online skill-based games, announced on Friday that, after consulting with attorneys, it has closed its site to U.S. citizens to comply with the letter and spirit of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act of 2006.

Progressive Gaming to Develop "Peer-to-Peer" Casino Poker Machines

Las Vegas - Progressive Gaming International (PGI), a manufacturer of casino gambling machines, announced on Monday that it is developing a "World Series of Poker 'Peer to Peer' Texas Hold'em" game, which will allow casino patrons to play poker on a wired or wireless device on a secure intranet server. Casino owner Harrah's Entertainment granted PGI a six-year license of the World Series of Poker brand, and will install a number of the systems in its casinos.

Bush Signs Bill Banning Internet Gambling

Washington, DC - President Bush today signed into law a ban on online wagering. The legislation was included in the SAFE Port Act. The decision by the Republican majority to lump the Internet gambling ban onto the bipartisan ports bill had drawn loud criticism from industry groups for the legalization and regulation of online gambling. Opponents of the new law include Poker Players Alliance a grassroots advocacy organization of more than 110,000 poker enthusiasts. "Today is a dark day for the great American game of poker," said Michael Bolcerek, president of alliance.

World Poker Tour Launches Online Poker Academy

Los Angeles - WPT Enterprises, operators of the World Poker Tour, on Wednesday announced the launch of a Web-based poker education center and online community. The WPT Academy includes video tutorials hosted by poker pros, and a hand search engine and simulator called Handsim that lets users search the database for players, hole card values, card combinations, odds percentages and other data. The database contains over 1,700 final table hands from 13 World Poker Tour tournaments, and allows users to follow play-by-play recaps of top players like Scotty Nguyen, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth. Los Angeles-based WPT said that its WPT Academy will initially be offered for free to subscribers, and did not provide details on future subscription fees.

The flagship of the online gaming boom – PartyGaming - is being removed from the blue-chip FTSE100 index on Wednesday. Moreover, UK-listed gambling firm World Gaming has put its shares on hold, because the proposed US ban on internet gambling threatens to dry up a vital source of revenue for the company. The decision - effective immediately - comes after "fundamental uncertainty over [the firm's] ability to continue trading", World Gaming said. Like other gambling firms, it relies heavily on revenue from US customers.

Congress Approves Ban on Internet Gambling

Washington - Congress on Saturday approved a bill that would ban most forms of Internet gambling in the U.S. The legislation prohibits banks and credit card companies from accepting transactions from would-be U.S. customers and Internet gambling sites, and assesses fines or penalties for those who fail to comply. The bill was attached to unrelated legislation aimed at improving port security, after an earlier attempt by Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) to add it to a defense spending bill failed.

Analysis: Online Gambling Ban is a Step Backward, Not Forward

Over the weekend, Republican legislators successfully slipped an online gambling prohibition amendment into a port security bill that leaders of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives agreed to pass. After being in the works for over 10 years, the legislation is now expected to be approved and signed into law by President Bush effective within two weeks. A general ban on online gambling is a bad idea and will adversely affect the US Economy in general and the media industry in particular.

It is currently all being fueled by Internet gambling, either directly or indirectly. The British magazine Gambling.com just landed former Esquire Senior Designer Stuart Tolley as Art Director. The September/October issue features Hollywood actor Eric Bana in his first interview, since filming completed of the poker movie, Lucky You (opens March 13, 2007). In the movie, Bana plays a pro poker player pitted against his estranged father, played by Robert Duvall.

Activision Ships "World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions"

Minneapolis - Activision on Tuesday shipped its "World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions" title for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PSP and the PC. The Xbox 360 version of the game features DigiMask facial mapping technology, which allows players to map their face directly onto their in-game character.

Las Vegas - Online gambling site Bodog.com announced on Friday that its sponsored player Jamie Gold took the top prize of $12 million in the 2006 World Series of Poker, and has signed a two-year endorsement deal with the company.

PokerFriday morning, the largest single payout in live poker history – $12 million dollars – was securily in the hands of one grand champion, Jamie Gold. He beat out the other eight players at the final prestigious table in the World Series of Poker Championship at Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. 
Poker is a game that is easy to take multiplatform and find ways for the audience to interact, as well as get sponsors in on the action. And there are no signs that the poker craze is cooling off anytime soon.

Las Vegas - The Associated Press on Monday reported on the relationship between the World Series of Poker, a real-world card game tournament, and the online gambling sites that have recently drawn the ire of the U.S. Justice Dept. It is estimated that about half of the 8,700 players at the event in Las Vegas qualified in tournaments for cash at sites like PokerStars.com, PartyPoker.com and Bodog.com -- which the government says are illegal.

World Poker Tour Licenses Brand for U.K. Mobile Gambling Service

Los Angeles - WPT Enterprises announced on Tuesday that it has licensed its World Poker Tour brand to London-based 3G-Scene, for use in a mobile gambling service. A multiplayer mobile phone version of "Texas Hold'em," which allows players to wager real money against other live players, is currently available from several U.K. wireless carriers.

CEO of Online Poker Site PartyGaming to Resign

London - Gibraltar-based PartyGaming, owner of the largest online poker website in the world, announced that its chief executive officer, Richard Segal, will resign in June. Segal, who lives in the U.K., is understood to have made the decision after he refused the board's request to relocate to Gibraltar permanently. Segal led PartyGaming's initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange last year. He is also credited with spearheading the company's expansion into blackjack and the unification of its online betting system.

PixelPlay to Develop World Poker Tour Interactive TV Games

New York - PixelPlay, a developer of interactive TV games and entertainment, announced on Monday that it has signed a license agreement with WPT Enterprises, for the rights to develop and publish World Poker Tour-branded casino games for interactive TV platforms. New York-based PixelPlay's first titles will include two single-player interactive Texas Hold 'Em games and a multiplayer interactive Texas Hold 'Em game, with additional titles planned for release in 2007.
