Casual Games Publisher PopCap Raises $22.5 Million

Seattle - PopCap Games, a developer and publisher of casual video games, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $22.5 million in its first round of outside financing, led by Meritech Capital Partners.

Dublin, Ireland - Casual games publisher PopCap Games announced on Tuesday that its flagship "Bejeweled" franchise has hit 25 million in unit sales. More than 350 million copies of the game have been downloaded from the Web, while tens of millions of copies have been installed on mobile phones. "Considering we tried to sell Bejeweled outright to more than one industry giant back in the early days of our company, and got no takers even after reducing our asking price to US$60,000, this little game has done all right for itself," said Jason Kapalka, chief creative officer and co-founder of PopCap.

Seattle - More than one in five (20.5%) of players of casual video games have a physical, mental or developmental disability -- compared with 15.1% of the overall U.S. population who are disabled -- according to a survey conducted by Information Solutions Group on behalf of casual games publisher PopCap Games.
