PostNapster Adds 66,000 Subscribers, Posts Loss of $17 MillionAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 9, 2006 - 3:45am.
Los Angeles - Napster announced on Thursday that it added 66,000 subscribers during its third fiscal quarter, ended Dec. 31, 2005, and now claims in excess of 500,000 subscribers to its digital music service. The company's revenue of $23.5 million during the quarter was nearly double the $12.1 million it reported a year earlier; however, Napster posted a loss of $17 million for the period. The loss was partly attributed to a 68% increase in marketing expenditures, from $9.2 million to $15.4 million. In a conference call with investors, Napster CEO Chris Gorog denied recent rumors that the company was seeking a buyer, or that it planned layoffs beyond its recent dismissal of some middle managers, the Associated Press reported. Gorog also said that the company has enough cash on hand to operate through 2007.
Washington Post: Five Senate Offices Fingered in Wikipedia EditsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 9, 2006 - 3:09am.
Washington - An investigation into partisan edits made to Wikipedia online encyclopedia entries for members of Congress has found that edits could be traced directly to Internet addresses within at least five Senators' offices, The Washington Post reported on Thursday. The edits, which included deletions of past controversies and politically motivated insults, prompted Wikipedia to temporarily block access from some Capitol Hill addresses. The investigation by Wikinews traced edits back to addresses within offices for Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.), Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). "There were several factual things that were wrong," Tom Steward, a spokesman for Coleman, told The Post, while Biden spokesman Norm Kurz told The Post that changes that were "made to Biden's site by this office were designed to make it more fair and accurate."

Post: SEC to Seek Charges Against Time Warner for AOL Ad DealsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on April 13, 2004 - 6:23am.
Dulles, Va. -- Media giant Time Warner may soon be charged in connection to $400 million in questionable advertising revenue that it booked following its 2001 merger with America Online, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday. The revenue being examined by the Securities and Exchange Commission reportedly stems from a $400 million ad deal with German media giant Bertelsmann. The SEC has alleged that AOL inflated its ad revenue through several deals, including the one with Bertelsmann. "There were a lot of deals that were not kosher," an unnamed government officials told The Post. The SEC reportedly plans to send a formal letter outlining the specifics of the case to Time Warner by early this summer, and negotiations for a possible settlement could follow several weeks later. The Post said that the SEC is also considering financial sanctions against the company.
