San Francisco - HandHeld Entertainment, a maker of portable media players, announced on Thursday that it has raised $3.83 million in a private placement of its shares.

Jupiter, Fla. - BabyUniverse, an online retailer and content publisher in the pregnancy, baby and toddler market, has raised $2 million in a private placement of stock with affiliates of Wyndcrest Holdings, an investment company controlled by BabyUniverse CEO John Textor. The company sold about 260,000 shares at a price of $7.58 a share. The funds will be used for general corporate purposes, BabyUniverse said.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Tvia, a developer of chips used in flat-panel TVs, digital video recorders and other products, announced on Tuesday that it raised about $11.9 million through a private placement of 4.77 million of its shares with institutional investors.

Digital Sheet Music Firm FreeHand Raises $550,000 in New Funding

Los Altos, Calif. - FreeHand Systems, a provider of digital sheet music products and services, said on Thursday that it has raised $550,000 in a new round of private funding. The company said that the money came in the form of a direct private investment. Los Altos, Calif.-based FreeHand is the manufacturer of a digital music tablet, which includes technology to display and publish digitally delivered sheet music. The company also operates a web site that offers more than 85,000 titles for digital download, which can then be transferred to the tablet.
