Retailer GameStop Launches "Respect the Ratings" Campaign

Grapevine, Texas - GameStop, the nation's largest specialty game retailer, announced on Friday the launch of a "Respect the Ratings" campaign, which includes the addition of in-store signage at its 3,600 locations, and the creation of a website intended to provide parents with a detailed explanation of the industry's ESRB game ratings system.

Senators Clinton, Lieberman Help Launch Video Game PSA Campaign

Washington - U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) joined Patricia Vance, president of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) this week in Washington to launch a nationwide PSA campaign that will encourage parents to use game ratings when buying games for their children.

Office of National Drug Control Policy Posts Videos on YouTube

San Mateo, Calif. - Hoping to reach more of America's tech-savvy youth, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) on Tuesday became the first federal cabinet agency to post videos on popular video sharing site YouTube. The ONDCP has begun posting videos on the site of anti-drug advertising, national drug policy announcements and other exclusive content. John Walters, the director of ONDCP and President Bush's "Drug Czar," said that the move is an effort by his office to "remain effective communicators in this new information age." Taking advantage of "new media" technology is nothing new for ONDCP. In early 2005, the office launched the first official blog for a cabinet-level agency, and it also posts podcasts of speeches, commentary from public health officials and audio of anti-drug events.

Parents Group Criticizes V-Chip PSA Campaign; TV Legislation Favored

San Francisco - The Parents Television Council, an advocacy group for family-friendly programming, has criticized a $300 million PSA campaign launched by broadcasters and pay-TV providers that aims to educate parents on how to use the V-chip and other technologies to filter programming for children, CNET News.com reported.

Washington - The Advertising Council, a non-profit that develops public service announcement campaigns, on Tuesday announced the launch of a national campaign that calls on parents to take a more active role in their children's TV viewing habits.

Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan Team on Hong Kong Anti-piracy PSA

Hong Kong - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has teamed with fellow action movie actor Jackie Chan to produce an anti-piracy public service announcement for television audiences in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The PSA was produced by Hong Kong's Intellectual Property Department, with the cooperation of the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth. "The fact that Hong Kong is willing to put this PSA on TV shows Hong Kong is serious about fighting piracy," Schwarzenegger told Chinese business newspaper The Standard. A Hong Kong man recently became the first person in the world to be sent to prison for uploading movies to an Internet file-sharing network. "If we don't use him as an example, then more people will do it," Chan told The Standard.

Entertainment Retailers Produce Joint PSA for Parents on Ratings Systems

Washington -- A coalition of entertainment industry retailers comprising music, movies and video games on Wednesday introduced a new website and public service announcement intended to inform parents on the various ratings systems they employ -- as part of Entertainment Ratings & Labeling Awareness Month. The Coalition of Entertainment Retail Trade Associations (CERTA) -- which includes the Digital Media Association (DiMA); Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA); National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM); National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO); and Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) -- represents 2,000 retailers and exhibitors that operate more than 40,000 theaters, video and video game stores, music stores and other retail outlets. The website provides information in multimedia formats on the motion picture, music and video game ratings systems, and the policies of companies that sell such media. The coalition's public service announcement is also set to run on in-store monitors in 5,000 video stores.
