NPR Teams with Livio to Launch New Internet Radio Device

Washington - National Public Radio (NPR), the producer of programming for independent public radio stations, has teamed with Internet radio developer Livio to launch the NPR Radio, a $200 device that lets users access more than 1,000 NPR station streams, as well as podcasts and audio archives.

Jelli Expands User-Controlled Radio with Triton, Austereo

San Mateo, Calif. - Jelli, the developer of a service that lets Web users control songs played on terrestrial radio stations, announced on Tuesday that it has signed a syndication deal with Triton, as well as a distribution deal with Australian broadcaster Austereo. San Mateo, Calif.-based Jelli recently began a trial of its service with CBS Bay Area radio station KITS LIVE 105. Jelli will now also be available to Triton's more than 4,500 U.S. radio affiliations -- both terrestrially and online -- and in Australia on Austereo stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The company added that it plans to release an iPhone application in early 2010.

Rumor: Apple to Add FM Radio to iPhone via Software Update

San Francisco - Apple is preparing to add FM radio functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch via a software update, according to a report on the rumor site 9to5Mac. The application will reportedly work with all current models, taking advantage of an FM transceiver already present in the devices but not being used to receive FM radio signals.

Arbitron Launches Cross-Platform Group

Columbia, Md. - Making a push to expand beyond its traditional radio audience measurement business, Arbitron said that it has formed a new Cross-Platform media measurement group. The company said that it plans to use its core Portable People Meter (PPM) technology, which detects embedded signals within encoded audio streams, to "capture an integrated view of the modern consumer media experience" including TV, radio, Internet, mobile and placed-based media.

CBS to Launch Last.fm-Powered HD Radio Channels in 4 Cities

New York - CBS (NYSE: CBS) announced this week that its Last.fm social music discovery service will be used to "crowdsource" programming for new terrestrial HD radio channels in four top U.S. markets. The channels, which will be available as of Oct. 5 to HD radio owners in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco, will feature a mix of music from Last.fm's user-generated weekly charts, "combined with live performances and interviews from the Last.fm studios in New York, and event updates."

Washington - The Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from artists, record labels and broadcasters earlier this week on whether terrestrial radio stations should have to royalties to performers on records, instead of just songwriters. Artists including Sheila E, Sheryl Crow, Herbie Hancock and will.i.am, along with record labels represented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), argued in favor of additional royalty payments to performers, while radio broadcasters like Clear Channel argued they would cause financial hardship.

"When you grow as fast as we have this quickly, your inventory gets ahead of you. San Francisco - Jelli on Wednesday introduced a "crowdsourced" radio programming model, where Web users will help determine what songs are played both online, and over the air on a traditional radio station. Users can rate what songs are playing, determine what the next song will be "seconds before its plays," and "even vote to pull a song off-the-air, instantly." The company partnered with CBS Radio-owned (NYSE: CBS) Live 105 in San Francisco to launch the "Jelli" show, which debuts on Sunday, June 28 during the stations 10:00 P.M. - 12:00 Midnight programming block.
