Sundance VOD Channel to Offer Unreleased Indie Films

Los Angeles - Rainbow Media's (NYSE: CVC) newly-acquired Sundance Channel plans to launch a new video-on-demand service for cable and satellite systems that will offer some of the many films submitted and screened at the Sundance Film Festival that did not receive a theatrical release, the Los Angeles Times reports. Sundance Selects aims to offer 50 new titles a year, more than a third of which will be nonfiction; movies on the service are expected to cost $7 or $8 each. Rainbow also operates the independent film video-on-demand services IFC in Theaters and IFC Festival Direct. The company told the Times it currently has no plans to bring Sundance Selects online.

Voom HD Claims $1B in Damages from DISH Network Exit

New York - Voom HD Networks, a suite of HD channels owned by Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Rainbow Media, has filed a complaint against satellite TV provider DISH Network (NASD: DISH) with the New York Supreme Court, claiming over $1 billion in damages in the wake of DISH's dropping Voom's channels from its service last month, Multichannel News reported.

IFC Films Made Available on Amazon Unbox

New York - Rainbow Media's IFC Films has announced a deal that will make its titles available through Amazon Unbox (NASD: AMZN), a service that downloads movies, TV shows and Web video content to PCs, TiVo set-top boxes and portable media players. Initial titles include "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and "After the Wedding."

AMC to Post Episodes of "Mad Men" for Sale on iTunes Store

New York - Rainbow Media Holdings' AMC TV network said on Thursday that it will post episodes of its first original drama series, "Mad Men," for purchase and download on Apple's iTunes Store the day after they air. All 13 episodes will be available as a Season Pass for $24.99, or individually for $1.99 each.

Cablevision Adds VOOM HD Channels

Bethpage, N.Y. - Cable TV provider Cablevision announced on Thursday that it will add 15 new high-definition channels from Rainbow Media's VOOM HD Networks to its lineup. With the new additions, scheduled to launch later this month, Cablevision will count a total of over 40 HD channels.

Rainbow Media Expands Video-on-Demand Services

New York - Rainbow Media on Tuesday announced an expansion of the video-on-demand services it offers to cable and satellite TV providers. The operator of networks including IFC, AMC, Fuse and We said it has adopted the "Skool" brand across its VOD properties. The company also renamed its Mag Rack service "Lifeskool," and launched a new service called Musicskool that will offer music lessons and instruction. Rainbow said its Sportskool service is now available in over 22 million U.S. homes.

New York - Sportskool, a unit of Rainbow Media that develops sports-related video-on-demand and DVD programming, announced on Thursday that it has partnered with rapper Chuck D (Public Enemy) and And 1 streetball star Wailyy "Main Event" Dixon to create a streetball instructional VOD program. Shot on location at Behagen Park in the Bronx, the streetball VOD program launched today on Sportskool, which is available on cable systems including Comcast, Time Warner, Cablevision and Charter.

Rainbow Media, Singapore Interests Invest $20 Million in HD Programming

Cannes, France - Rainbow HD Holdings, a unit of cable TV provider Cablevision's Rainbow Media Holdings, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Singapore-based media firm Mega Media and the Media Development Authority of Singapore, to invest $20 million over three years on the development of high-definition television programs. The content created under the partnership will be jointly owned by the three parties, and will air on Rainbow Media's recently launched VOOM HD Networks, a suite of high-definition TV channels. "We have formed an important alliance today with a strong production partner that will help share the economic burden in bringing quality high definition programming to the world marketplace," said Greg Moyer, co-general manager of VOOM HD Networks. Rainbow Media's other properties include AMC, The Independent Film Channel, Fuse and WE.

Rainbow Media to Maintain 21 HD Channels of Defunct VOOM Service

Jericho, N.Y. -- Rainbow Media Holdings, a unit of Cablevision and NBC that operates cable channels like IFC, Fuse and AMC, announced on Friday that it will operate all 21 of the HD channels offered by VOOM, the now-defunct high-definition satellite TV service recently shuttered by Cablevision. Rainbow said it signed an agreement with DISH Network operator EchoStar to carry the channels by 2006; EchoStar plans to launch 10 of the channels for its subscribers on May 1. Cablevision planned to shut down the money-losing VOOM service for its 21,000 subscribers on April 30, despite the best efforts and offers of personal financing from Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan to keep the service alive.
