Wednesday that it has struck a deal with TiVo (NASD: TIVO) to offer special high-definition
digital video recorders to its residential and small business clients. Expected
to launch in early 2010, the TiVo DVR from RCN will integrate RCN's digital
programming and video-on-demand library with a variety of broadband video
programming. RCN offers its services in the DC, Philadelphia,
New York, Boston
and Chicago
markets.

The deal was first announced in August. Astound, a unit of Kirkland, Wash.-based Wave Broadband, currently offers broadband services to 55,000 customers in Concord and Walnut Creek, Calif. RCN's San Francisco operations will add about 18,000 customers to that total. RCN said that selling its primary operations on the West Coast will allow it to focus on its core Northeast Corridor and Chicago regions. Herndon, Va. - RCN, a provider of cable television, high-speed Internet and phone services, said on Wednesday that it has hired New York-based Blackstone Group to explore the possible sale of the company, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. The news sent company shares up more than 8% in very heavy trading on the Nasdaq on Wednesday afternoon. According to two unnamed sources, the company, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy two years ago and, may draw bids from private-equity firms and communications companies. Herndon, Va.-based RCN has about 400,000 subscribers in cities including D.C. and Los Angeles, but has struggled to compete with larger rivals such as Comcast and Time Warner. Separately, the company on Wednesday announced the launch of a new portable digital music download service, RCN MusicToGo. The service will allow subscribers to transfer unlimited songs to two Windows Media-compatible portable audio players for $13.95 per month.

Princeton, N.J. -- RCN Corporation, a provider of bundled phone, cable TV and high-speed Internet services in major U.S. markets, announced on Thursday that it has filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection, adding that it has reached agreements with key lenders to reduce its debt from $1.66 billion to $480 million. The New Jersey-based company said that Deutsche Bank Securities will provide $460 in new financing when it emerges from bankruptcy, expected in the fourth quarter of 2004. "We continue to believe that our strategy of selling bundled services over a broadband network will define the future of the industry," said RCN chairman and CEO David C. McCourt. "RCN can reduce its debt and emerge as a stronger, more efficient company, giving us a competitive advantage in the long run."
