Lauren Conrad's Announcement a Dud on “Finale” of The Hills

Authored by Scott Goldberg on December 10, 2007 - 8:13pm.

Nausea overcomes me heading into the season finale of The Hills. Today I read that Lauren Conrad doesn’t understand the popularity of the show, telling Entertainment Weekly, “People are just obsessed with other people’s lives. I don’t know whether it’s kind of a way to escape their own, or something to follow.” And here we are, the Royal We, preparing to review the show’s Season Three finale. What has MTV scripted for us tonight?

Marie Osmond Fainting on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Scripted?

Authored by Scott Goldberg on November 27, 2007 - 12:28pm.

Reality TV seems to be doing anything it can to shed the first word in its name. TMZ reports that a source inside ABC’s Dancing With the Stars says Marie Osmond’s recent fainting spell – which she attributed to the poor air quality following October’s southern California fires – was scripted.  Another popular reality show, MTV’s The Hills, has come under heat recently for being scripted, something its centerpiece, Lauren Conrad, vehemently denied.

LCHow little Lauren Conrad understands the truth of her statement on MySpace: “Many of you have been asking me if the rumors are true,” she wrote. “There are false rumors every week about me and I can’t address every rumor out there, but I feel like this was important for me to respond to.  The show is not fake and this is really my life.”

A&E Cuts Losses, Cancels ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’

Authored by Scott Goldberg on November 2, 2007 - 12:04pm.
Duane The show “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” a hit reality program on A&E that features Duane “Dog” Chapman and his bounty hunting Hawaii-based family, has fallen on rocky times.  First, a tape from a telephone conversation that shows Chapman repeatedly using racial slurs about his son’s girlfriend, who is black, was released to the media.  Turns out his son sold the tape for “a lot of money,” according to Chapman’s lawyer.  And as of today, A&E has taken Chapman’s show off the air.

Audrina Patridge says 'The Hills' is not Scripted

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 31, 2007 - 5:54am.
Audrina PatridgeCan you imagine the meetings at MTV that took place over how to handle the news that its reality staple, The Hills, was scripted?  What MTV fails to realize is that most people could care less, real or not.  If the show is entertaining, we’ll watch.

The Evolution of Tila Tequila

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 28, 2007 - 5:49pm.
TilaThe script’s gone according to plan: Attract millions of fans on MySpace, and turn that into genuine, real world stardom.  Tila Tequila has taken her internet fame farther, perhaps, than anyone has in the rise of social networking sites.  Counterparts like Jessica Lee Rose (LonelyGirl15), who seem to grab a slice of the spotlight only to see it flame out shortly after, come and go.  But now Tila Tequila, with one of the most popular reality shows on television, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, seems here to stay, for at least a little while.  The New York Times has a thorough feature piece on her evolution, which you can read here.

Comedy Central Moves Forward with the Colbert Campaign

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 26, 2007 - 8:43am.
Stephen Colbert's Presidential Run is as Serious as his EyebrowsWhen Stephen Colbert announced his candidacy for president recently, it was quickly dismissed as a joke, despite those familiar with the show knowing the serious degree with which Colbert and his writers approach pranks.  After all, how could a political satirist whose show is broadcast by a comedy channel really think it possible to run for president?  But as we have found out since, Colbert is far from joking.

Dina Lohan set to begin Filming for Reality TV Show

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 26, 2007 - 7:48am.
Dina and Lindsay in happier timesIt was only a matter of time, was it not?  Dina Lohan, mother to Lindsay and Ali Lohan, will begin filming her reality TV series on October 30th, People reports.  The untitled show, which will air on E!, will primarily focus on Dina and Ali, not Lindsay.  “There are so many misconceptions about me and my family,” says Dina. “I’m setting the record straight.”  Reality TV would certainly be the right venue for that, no doubt!

LC’s Date Gavin Beasley says MTV's 'The Hills' is Scripted

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 26, 2007 - 6:52am.
He Just Put a Cramp on MTV's WeekendAnd now, shocking news has hit the airwaves: MTV’s The Hills…are you sitting down for this?...is SCRIPTED.  Did you honestly believe otherwise?  Take our Reality TV poll and tell us what you think.  According to Gavin Beasley, who went on a date with the show’s lead, Lauren Conrad, this Monday’s scene at Brody Jenner’s barbeque is a classic example.

MTV’s ‘The Hills’ Caught in a Lie with Heidi and Spencer @ LAX

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 24, 2007 - 11:13am.
Spencer and Heidi Doing a Scene for The HillsLeave it to TMZ to find the sordidness in just about anything, and you have to give them special props for the canny snipe they pulled on MTV’s The Hills at LAX.  The site’s photographers caught Spencer Pratt bidding farewell to Heidi Montag at the airport on October 12th, only to find him kissing her hello at the baggage claim terminal after a costume change.

The DonaldSome of you will care more about the delivery of your mail today than finding out the cast of Donald Trump’s forthcoming Celebrity Apprentice, and with good reason.  It’s nothing to brag about, and probably means little for the possibility of the show’s rebound.  Among the celebs:

Spencer Pratt Plots a Permanent Spot on Your Television

Authored by Scott Goldberg on October 16, 2007 - 11:48am.
A Future TrillionaireSometimes fame goes to their heads, doesn’t it?  In an interview with Radar Magazine for its November issue, Pratt, of MTV’s The Hills and Heidi Montag’s fiancé, said he hopes to be a billionaire by 30 and to continue his role as a TV star well past the life of his current show.  The 24-year-old offered no specific plans for achieving the wealth, though he did say, "I'm trying to be a billionaire before 30. Once you find an open market, that's where you can make billions to trillions of dollars," he said.  Trillions, Spencer?  Why stop there?  Why not make Gazillions, hmmm?

Lauren Conrad Decides to Stay in The Hills

Authored by Scott Goldberg on September 20, 2007 - 1:17pm.
Lauren Conrad says she nearly quit The Hills, until she realized she completely forgot what life without a reality show is likeIn the October issue of Seventeen, Lauren Conrad (that’s LC, to you) of MTV’s The Hills says she almost quit the show because of the well-reported feud with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt.  “I actually came dangerously close to not doing season three, because I really didn’t want to do the show with Heidi and Spencer,” she said.  Then she realized she hasn’t lived life without MTV, cameras, and a reality television show in nearly a decade, so picturing her days passing like any Average Joe seemed really, really pathetic.

Review: CBS’s Kid Nation Premiere Episode

Authored by Scott Goldberg on September 19, 2007 - 5:45pm.
Kids of Kid Nation, modernizing the donkey-drawn carriage“The most talked about show of the fall,” as CBS has been advertising it in commercials leading up to tonight’s first episode, deserves a play-by-play analysis.  From the hype and controversy surrounding the show – threats of action for breaking child labor laws by New Mexico Attorney General Gary King, upheaval from Hollywood unions and general disgust for the reality genre, kids coming home with injuries of various kinds – you’d be forgiven for thinking this is “The television event of the fall,” as networks like to put it.  So here’s a recap:
