MOG Online Music Service to Tap Echo Nest Platform

Somerville, Mass. - The Echo Nest, the provider of a "machine learning platform that listens to and reads about music all over the Web to enable better music search, recommendation and interactivity," said on Tuesday that its technology will be integrated into MOG's forthcoming All Access online music service. The All Access service from MOG -- a network of and user-created music blogs -- is scheduled to launch later this month.

New York - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) on Monday doled out its $1 million Netflix Prize to a group of engineers and researchers who were able to improve the accuracy of the company's movie recommendation system by 10%. The team "BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos," consisting of three teams that had previously competed against one another, was awarded the $1 million prize offered by the contest, which Netflix launched in 2006.

San Francisco - Personalized radio and music discovery service Pandora expects to be profitable next year, after earning as much as $40 million in revenue this year, founder Tim Westergren told Bloomberg. The company's iPhone application is attracting 20,000 new users each day, according to Westergren. In related news, Pandora today announced that its service will now offer song lyrics, having reached a licensing deal with Gracenote. The deal includes hundreds of thousands of tracks from more than 20,000 music publishing catalogs.

Somerville, Mass. - The Echo Nest, a 'music intelligence platform' developed by MIT PhDs that aims to enhance music search and recommendations, said on Tuesday that it has partnered with U.K.-based streaming music service Spotfiy. Under the deal, The Echo Nest will help develop Spotify's playlist and music discovery functions. Currently available only in parts of Western Europe, Spotify reached 1 million users in March.

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) said on Wednesday that developers tasked with coming up with a 10% improvement on its movie recommendation system in its second-annual $1 million challenge fell short, and it instead again awarded a $50,000 "Progress Prize" to the scientists who came closest. The winning team, "BellKor in BigChaos" -- actually a combination of technology developed by two teams -- made a 9.44% improvement in Netflix's recommendation system.

San Francisco - A former video rental store owner-turned collaborative filtering technology developer on Tuesday launched ClerkDogs, a new movie recommendation engine that mixes technology with "video clerk analysis." The company's "Mash It" tool "consists of 35 mood-defining attributes that can be adjusted, resulting in a list of movie matches that bring consumers closer to movies they will love. For example, if you like 'Pulp Fiction' because of its dark humor and characters, you can find other movies based on those specific ingredients."

Los Angeles - Automatic music recommendation service Mufin has launched a public beta, and is now offering applications that connect with iTunes and Facebook. The service has analyzed the actual sounds of some 4 million tracks, and based on these acoustical characteristics, can compile playlists of songs that sound similar to one another.
