Edison, N.J. - Video game publisher Majesco on Tuesday shipped its "Nacho Libre" title for Nintendo DS to retailers. Developed by Budcat Creations, the game's release coincides with the DVD release of the Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies film of the same name.

Tokyo - Japanese consumer electronics firm Toshiba released its first HD DVD player in Japan on Friday, beating rival Sony to become the first to bring its next-generation DVD player to market. The Toshiba HD-XA1 will sell there for about $940. The HD-XA1 is slated for release in the U.S. later this month, where it will cost $799; another model, the HD-A1, is also slated to sell for $499. Toshiba hopes to sell between 600,000 and 700,000 HD DVD players worldwide through March 2007. Meanwhile, Sony plans to introduce its rival Blu-ray Disc DVD players in the U.S. in July, with the first models to sell for about $1,000.

Chicago - Midway Games on Friday shipped its "NBA Ballers: Phenom" title for Xbox to retailers. The sequel to Chicago-based Midway's million-plus unit-selling "NBA Ballers" is also slated for release for PlayStation 2 on April 5. Additionally, the publisher will release "NBA Ballers: Rebound" for Sony PSP on May 2. Midway will support the releases with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign that includes free copies of the in-game soundtrack, which features exclusive tracks from artists including Jin, Basement Beats and Phife Dawg.

New York - 2K Sports, a unit of video game publisher Take-Two Interactive, on Thursday shipped its "Top Spin 2" title for Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance to North American retailers. The game features the likenesses of 24 top tennis pros, including Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, and enables online play through Xbox Live. The game is also slated for release in Europe on April 7.

Boxford, Mass. - Game developer Funkitron on Monday released its PC game "Poker Superstars II," the sequel to its title based on the poker tournament broadcast on Fox Sports Net and NBC. The title features the likenesses of 15 poker pros seen on the TV series, including Johnny Chan, Barry Greenstein and Cyndy Violette.

Research Triangle Park, N.C. - Cell phone joint venture Sony Ericsson on Tuesday introduced its seventh Walkman phone, the W300, which features up to 1GB of memory, camera and video capture, and a 1" screen that displays media player information while the phone is closed. Scheduled to ship in the second quarter of 2006, the phone will also support data-sharing over a Bluetooth wireless connection.

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts on Tuesday shipped its "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II" real-time strategy PC game to retailers. The sequel was developed at EA's Los Angeles studio. EA also released its 'M' for Mature-rated "Black" title for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, developed by Criterion Games, and its "The Sims 2 Open for Business" PC expansion pack.

New York - Video game publisher 2K Games, a unit of Take-Two Interactive, said on Tuesday that it has released its "24: The Game" title for PlayStation 2. The 'M' for Mature-rated game features the likenesses and voice talent of characters from the Fox TV series, including Kiefer Sutherland and Elisha Cuthbert, as well as a storyline co-written by "24" writer Duppy Demetrius and a score from series composer Sean Callery.

Los Angeles - Vivendi Universal Games' Sierra Entertainment game publishing studio said it has shipped "Empire Earth II: The Art of Supremacy" to retailers. Worcester, Mass. - The non-profit Participatory Culture Foundation on Thursday announced the release of an open-source media player and Internet TV system. The Democracy Player is being developed for Windows, Mac and Linux, and also includes software that can be used to publish video, a program guide of hundreds of channels of available video, and a community-rated automatic feed of free new Internet videos. The Massachusetts-based Participatory Culture Foundation said that the Democracy Player is being developed with donations from Silicon Valley venture capitalist Andy Rappaport, and Mitch Kapor, Lotus founder and chairman of the Mozilla Foundation.

Los Angeles - Sales of movies on Sony's UMD format for its PSP handheld video game have been weaker than expected, according to a report in Variety, causing studios including Paramount, Warner and Sony itself to cut back on future movie releases. The report said successful releases have sold upwards of 100,000 units, but average UMD titles topped off around 50,000 units; top-selling UMD titles included "Napoleon Dynamite," "Chappelle's Show" and "Beavis & Butthead." "We are re-evaluating our position on any future releases at this time," Jeff Baker, senior vice president and general manager of Warner Bros. theatrical catalog, told Variety. "We're looking at this on a case-by-case basis. We're disappointed with consumer demand at this time." Warner Bros. said it has cancelled releases for six planned UMD titles. In a bid to help increase sluggish sales, Sony has plans to release an adapter that would enable the PSP to connect to a TV to play UMD movies.

London - U.K. mobile game developer I-play on Friday announced the North American and European launches of its "Torino 2006: Official Mobile Phone Game of the Olympic Winter Games." The company secured the rights for the game from Sports Multimedia Ltd, the exclusive interactive entertainment licensee of the International Olympic Committee.
