Jagex Says "RuneScape" MMOG Hits 1 Million Subscribers

Cambridge, England - U.K.-based game developer Jagex said on Thursday that its "RuneScape" massively multiplayer online roleplaying game has now surpassed one million subscribers. The game claims subscribers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and Scandinavia; Jagex also recently launched a German-language beta of RuneScape.

Virtual worlds for children and teens have been growing in popularity recently: the market share of visits to a group of seven children's and teens' virtual worlds (sites shown below) has grown by 68% in the past year. (week ending 4/28/07 vs. week ending 4/29/06). Runescape is by far the #1 site, with 44% of visits to the category.

 I thought I'd provide a breakdown of the online Entertainment industry to give an indication of where users are inclined to consume various forms of media. This may be used to inform at least the online component of a cross-media bundling strategy. Note that "Other" in the below table refers to websites within the broad Entertainment parent category.
