New York - SeaChange, a provider of video-on-demand delivery systems, announced on Tuesday that Verizon is using its equipment to power the on-demand elements of the Verizon FiOS TV Internet television service. The service is currently offering thousands of hours of on-demand movies and other programming in limited FiOS TV rollouts in Texas, Virginia and Florida.

Maynard, Mass. - SeaChange International, a provider of on-demand video technology, has acquired the remaining 72% stake that it did not already own in On Demand Group Ltd., a U.K.-based aggregator of television content. SeaChange paid $13.4 million for the 72% stake in On Demand Group, which is based in London and offers its aggregated content to pay-per-view services in Europe. Its customers include the cable operators ntl and Telewest in the U.K. On Demand Group also is a principal in the recently launched FilmFlex on-demand movie service venture with Sony Pictures and The Walt Disney Co.

San Mateo, Calif. -- SeaChange International, a Massachusetts-based provider of digital video systems, said that it has acquired San Mateo, Calif.-based San Liberate Technologies' interactive TV software business assets outside of North America for about $23.5 million. Liberate supplies software to some of the world's largest network operators, including ntl, Telewest and UGC in Europe. Under terms of the acquisition, SeaChange has been assigned certain customer contracts, as well as receiving patents and other intellectual property. The company said that it also will continue operations at Liberate's former facilities in San Mateo and London, England, and is continuing employment for about 20 Liberate employees.

Massachusetts-based SeaChange will exchange $25.5 million in cash for certain patents, and contracts with TV providers including ntl, Telewest and UGC in Europe. San Mateo, Calif.-based Liberate's North American assets were purchased earlier this month by a joint venture of cable operators Comcast and Cox, for $82 million. Liberate's middleware software for set-top boxes enables cable operators to run multiple services -- including high-definition television, video-on-demand and personal video recorders -- on multiple platforms.

Maynard, Mass. -- SeaChange, a provider of digital video systems used to deliver video-on-demand programming, announced that it has partnered with Nielsen Media Research to create an audience measurement service for video-on-demand. The service will allow advertisers and programmers to understand video-on-demand consumer habits, resulting in more targeted ad insertions and emerging ad formats like video-on-demand tier sponsorship. The measurement system will encompass only SeaChange video-on-demand systems, which are deployed in over 100 markets by cable TV operators including Adelphia, Cablevision, Comcast, Rogers and Time Warner Cable.

Portland, Ore. -- NCube, a provider of equipment for delivering on-demand media programming, announced on Wednesday that it has prevailed in patent litigation against rival SeaChange International. Delaware District Court Judge Joseph J. Farnan awarded NCube double the damages it claimed in the suit, as well as legal fees incurred. Oregon-based NCube sued Massachusetts-based SeaChange in Jan. 2001, claiming the company was infringing on its patent covering video server architecture that allows the server to provide scalable services to all service providers, and requires only minimal changes to make it compatible with the service providers' existing systems.
