Online Music Industry to Develop EU-Wide Licensing Scheme

Brussels - The EU's Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, on Wednesday announced a partnership between European royalty collection societies, major labels and online music retailers including Apple (NASD: AAPL) and Amazon (NASD: AMZN), to develop an EU-wide licensing scheme for music. Currently, rights for music and other copyrighted works must be negotiated separately for each individual country, with that particular country's collection society.

Madrid - A Spanish court has rejected a motion by copyright society SGAE to shutter a website, ElRincondeJesus.com, that offers links to media files available for download via the eD2K file-sharing network, TorrentFreak reported.

Madrid - Copyright owners in Spain have accepted that the government will not implement a "three-strikes" policy that would disconnect repeat file-swappers, but are still interested in pressing measures that would reduce Internet speed, Billboard reports.

Report: Spain Leads Europe in Illegal Music Downloading

Madrid - A new study from a Spanish authors' and publishers' society claims the country is Europe's worst offender when it comes to illegal music downloading, its citizens having grabbed over 1.2 billion tracks last year, Billboard reported.
