MLB.com Dumps Microsoft Silverlight for Adobe's Flash

San Francisco - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced that it has abandoned Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Silverlight video distribution platform and signed a two-year deal to instead use Adobe's (NASD: ADBE) Flash for its live and on-demand video offerings on MLB.com. The site will also provide an application built using Adobe AIR, that will provide additional features outside the Web browser.

Netflix Web Player Upgrade Taps Microsoft's Silverlight

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) said on Monday that it has deployed its second-generation media player for instant streaming of movies and TV episodes, which will utilize Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Silverlight video delivery platform. The deployment will initially be rolled out to a small percentage of new Netflix subscribers, but is expected to reach all subscribers by year's end.

Internap to Deploy Microsoft Silverlight Players on Radio Station Sites

Atlanta - Internap, a provider of content delivery network and other digital media services, said on Wednesday that it has partnered with Microsoft to launch live audio players built on Microsoft's Silverlight platform for its radio station group customers. The Silverlight players will enable real-time online ad insertion on sites for radio station groups including Citadel Communications, Univision and Radio One.

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft on Wednesday officially launched Silverlight, its answer to Flash video, and said World Wrestling Entertainment, HSN and "Entertainment Tonight" will be among the first to implement the cross-platform Web browser plug-in. "Entertainment Tonight" will feature the video technology on a mini-site dedicated to its Emmy Awards coverage, while Silverlight will become the primary video player for delivering the more than 14,000 streaming video clips available on WWE.com. Microsoft also announced that it will work with Novell to deliver Silverlight support for Linux.

Las Vegas - Microsoft on Monday introduced Silverlight, a new plug-in that allows media firms to deliver video, animation and games over the Web. Similar to Adobe's Flash browser plug-in, Microsoft's Silverlight will work with Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox browsers. Media companies that have announced support for Silverlight include Major League Baseball, Netflix, Brightcove, Akamai, Limelight Networks and Pinnacle Systems.
