MPAA Debuts Center for Content Protection in Asia-Pacific

Los Angeles - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with Singapore's Media Development Authority to create the Center for Content Protection, which will promote secure distribution of digital video content in the Asia-Pacific region. The MPAA says that, of the estimated $6.1 billion the studios lost to piracy worldwide in 2005, $1.2 billion came from piracy across the Asia-Pacific region. The stated goals of the Center are to promote secure distribution of digital TV; educate the public on the digital transition; support technical solutions for legal downloads, home networking and remote access; and discuss anti-piracy solutions among members.

Singapore - Shortly after enacting a ban on the sale of Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) "Mass Effect" video game over an alien-lesbian love scene, Singapore has changed course and will now only allow those over 18 to purchase the title, Reuters reported, citing an article in the local Strait Times. "Mass Effect" received the first-ever rating for a video game in Singapore, in a move that will likely accelerate the planned introduction of a game ratings system in the county, the Strait Times reported.

Singapore - Singapore's Media Development Authority has banned Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) "Mass Effect" video game in the country, over a scene that shows "a human woman and an alien woman kissing and caressing each other," Reuters reports, citing the local Straits Times newspaper. The country's parliament last month voted to let stand a ban on sex between men. Other titles that have been banned in Singapore due to sexual or violent content include "God of War 2," "The Darkness" and the "Grand Theft Auto" series.

WSJ: Apple Counter Sues Creative

The Wall St. Journal reports this afternoon that Apple has countersued Creative Technology, claiming that the make of MP3 players and sound cards has infringed on four of Apple's patents related to digital music. Creative sued Apple last week.

Hollywood - Amaru, a provider of broadband TV services in Singapore, announced on Tuesday that it signed a multi-year deal to offer titles from Sony Pictures Television International on its M2B video-on-demand service. Films from Sony Pictures and MGM will be available to view on televisions in Singapore via Amaru's set-top box, and also on the Singaporean online premium movie channel Dimension88.com.

Singapore - Video game publisher Electronic Arts on Tuesday announced plans to open a game development studio in Singapore, which will focus on localizing EA games into five languages for the Asian market, and also develop online games. The company named its vice president of operations for Asia, Irene Chua, to head the new studio. "We are happy that Electronic Arts has chosen Singapore to establish their primary localization studio in Asia," said Teo Ming Kian, chairman of Singapore's Economic Development Board. "It is a significant boost to our efforts in building Singapore into a digital media capital, where Singapore creations can be made for global consumption."

Singapore - Event organizer International Cyber Marketing announced that it will host the World Cyber Games this weekend in Singapore, where some 700 participants from 67 countries will square off for a cut of the $435,000 prize purse. The event, which last year was held in San Francisco, will feature titles including "Counter-Strike," "Halo 2," "Need for Speed Underground 2" and "Dead or Alive Ultimate."

Lucasfilm Opens Singapore Digital Animation Studio

Singapore - Lucasfilm, the production company founded by "Star Wars" director George Lucas, on Thursday officially launched its new digital animation studio in Singapore. "When we announced the formation of Lucasfilm Animation Singapore last August, we said we'd open our doors this fall, and we're right on schedule," said Lucas. The company said it hired Phillip Stamp as director of animation for the Singapore studio, which will release its first production, an animated TV series called "Clone Wars" based on the "Star Trek" storyline, some time in 2007. "We're leveraging not only the technology, but the expertise and the techniques developed over the years at Industrial Light & Magic and LucasArts to train a new generation of digital artists at our Singapore studio," said Lucasfilm chief technology officer Cliff Plumer.

Singapore -- Mediacorp, a state-owned TV production firm in Singapore, plans to launch Asia's first TV series for cell phones later this month, Reuters reported. The romantic drama "PS I Luv U" will air in 30 three-minute episodes for cell phone subscribers in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia, prior to airing in a single 90-minute TV program in early 2006. Mediacorp told Reuters it plans to produce at least 10 additional mobile TV series for 3G mobile phone services in 2006.

Microsoft to Launch Xbox Live in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore

Taipei -- Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will launch Xbox Live, the online gaming service for its Xbox video game console, in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore in April. The company has sold around 1.4 million Xbox consoles in the Asia-Pacific region, and also recently launched Xbox Live in South Korea -- the world's leader in broadband penetration. Xbox Asia general manager Alan Bowman told Reuters that the company has signed up 6,500 subscribers in Korea since launching on Oct. 30. "People can utilize their broadband connection at home, which is really a huge advantage for Asia, given that the penetration of broadband in homes throughout Asia is leading the world," Bowman told Reuters.
