Luxembourg - Internet telephone company Skype announced on Tuesday that it has signed worldwide license agreements with three major music publishing firms, which will allow it to sell master recording ringtones to users of its service. Skype has secured deals with EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music, in addition to the U.K.'s MCPS-PRS Alliance royalty collection society. The deals will at first only allow Skype users to buy ringtones from artists with Warner Music Group, with whom the company has a separate complementary agreement. Skype hopes the deal will lead to similar agreements with other labels. Additionally, the ringtones will initially be available only in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Poland, with full access to Skype's 94.6 million users to come within weeks, the company said.

Madrid - Fon, a Spain-based company dedicated to creating an international network of shared Wi-Fi connections, announced that it has raised more than $21.7 million in its first round of venture capital financing. Fon's goal is to create a grass-roots network of shared Wi-Fi links by turning individual users into an army of so-called "foneros," or people sharing wireless access.
