Post's Slate Group Launches Business Site "The Big Money"

Washington - The Slate Group, a Web publishing unit of The Washington Post that produces the online magazine Slate, said on Monday that it has launched a new business site called The Big Money. The company said that the site will cover the intersection of business and a variety of areas including technology, green initiatives, media, fashion and food. James Ledbetter Jr., the former deputy managing editor of CNN Money, will serve as the site's editor, with Elinor Shields, former managing editor of The Huffington Post, serving as deputy editor.

Washington - Slate, the daily online news and entertainment magazine owned by The Washington Post, said on Monday that it has launched a new online video magazine. Slate V will feature original video, top picks from around the Web and selected user-generated video. The company named multiple Emmy-winner Bill Smee as the site's executive producer, and former NPR correspondent Andy Bowers as editor of Slate V, which will cover topics including news and politics, culture and entertainment, and humor and animation.

Washington, D.C. -- Putting an end to months of rumors, The Washington Post Company announced over the holidays that it will acquire popular online magazine Slate from Microsoft for an undisclosed sum. Slate, which had 6 million unique users in November, according to Nielsen NetRatings, offers a mix of articles about politics, news and culture. The online magazine, which was launched in 1996, said that its revenue increased 37% to $44.7 million for the first nine months of 2004. Jacob Weisberg, who will remain the magazine's editor, said that the Post "is the best place for Slate to continue to grow and develop." The business operations of Slate will be run by the Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive unit; Cliff Sloan, the vice president of business development and general counsel of WPNI, has been named the publisher. Slate's offices in New York and D.C. will continue to operate. In a separate agreement between Microsoft and WPNI, Slate will continue to be available to users on MSN through links on the MSN portal.

Washington -- The Washington Post Company is reportedly close to acquiring Microsoft online news site Slate, according to a story on the New York magazine website. Microsoft put Slate on the market in July, saying that it was seeking an owner "where the rest of their businesses are more aligned." The New York Times reportedly was interested, but has since decided to pass on the deal. New York Magazine said that the Post is attracted to Slate's talent pool, as well as its "smart-people-procrastinating-at-work readership." Both Slate and the Post declined to comment.

Seattle -- Microsoft has begun talks with up to six potential buyers for its online magazine, Slate, with a deal to close possibly within weeks or months, a source close to the talks told Reuters. Launched in 1996 by former New Republic editor Michael Kinsley, Slate covers news, politics and culture. Microsoft has reportedly set as a condition that Slate remain affiliated with its MSN unit, which currently hosts the online magazine.

Los Angeles -- Vivendi Universal Games, the video game publishing arm of the Franco-American media conglomerate, on Friday announced details of the launches of a number of upcoming video game titles. The company said its title "The Hobbit," based on J.R.R. Tolkein's novel of the same name, will come out in the fall for all three major consoles and Game Boy Advance. A game based on the classic sci-fi TV series "Battlestar Galactica," currently in development at U.K.-based Warthog Games, will be released in the fall for PlayStation 2 and Xbox to coincide with a new original Sci-Fi Channel "Battlestar Galactica" miniseries. Japan-based video game developer Genki is working on "The Fast and the Furious," based on the motion picture, for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, while Magenta Software and Digital Eclipse Software are creating versions of "The Cat in the Hat," based on the Dr. Seuss book and upcoming DreamWorks film, for console and the PC, respectively. Vivendi also reports that Albany, NY-based studio Vicarious Visions is developing "Crash Nitro Kart," a sequel in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, and Digital Eclipse Software will release "Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs," a new addition to the Spyro the Dragon franchise, for Game Boy Advance in the fourth quarter.
