Microsoft to Shutter Soapbox User-Generated Video Site

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has opted to shutter the Soapbox user-generated video portion of its MSN service, according to published reports.

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft has reopened its Soapbox video-sharing site, after ceasing new registrations for the service while it installed filters to block the uploading of copyrighted content. "We are also now conducting proactive filtering of all uploaded content, using technology from Audible Magic," reads a post on the Soapbox blog. "Audible Magic bases their filtering on the video's audio track and their database is being updated constantly. By using this technology, we see this as an important step to ensure the viability and success of Soapbox over the long run."

San Francisco - Microsoft has temporarily closed its new Soapbox video-sharing site off to new users, while it implements stronger copyright filtering technology, CNET News.com reported on Friday.

San Francisco - CNET News.com reported on Thursday that sources say both Microsoft and video compression developer DivX have recently met with video-sharing site Revver, with eyes toward possibly acquiring the company.

Microsoft Enters Video-Sharing Market with Launch of Soapbox

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft on Tuesday announced its entry into the popular video-sharing space dominated by YouTube with the U.S. beta launch of Soapbox on MSN Video. The Soapbox service lets users upload and share up to 100MB of personal videos, and will be deeply integrated with Microsoft online services including Windows Live Spaces -- the company's new social networking platform -- and Windows Live Messenger. "By adding a user-uploaded video service, we are rounding out our existing investments in commercially produced and original content on MSN Video," said Rob Bennett, general manager of entertainment and video services for MSN. Microsoft's MSN attracts 465 million visitors a month, including 11 million visitors to MSN Video, while YouTube claimed 34 million visitors last month.

Soapbox Mobile to Power Movie Ticket Sales for Amp'd Mobile

Carlsbad, Calif. - Soapbox Mobile announced on Thursday that mobile virtual network operator Amp'd Mobile will offer its service that lets subscribers search for movie showtimes and purchase tickets from their mobile phones. Amp'd Mobile subscribers will securely register their credit cards against their phone numbers with Soapbox, and then be able purchase tickets on their phones with a PIN number.

Mobile Marketing Applications Firm Soapbox Raises $10 Million

San Diego - Soapbox Mobile, a provider of mobile marketing and commerce applications, announced on Monday that it has raised $10 million in new funding from Equal Elements, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based venture fund. San Diego-based Soapbox Mobile provides applications that can be used by consumer brands, marketing, advertising and promotional agencies to target consumers with mobile phone campaigns. The company will use the funds to accelerate growth, enhance product development and expand sales and marketing efforts.
