Social Media Sites Thoof, Social.fm Shut Down

Los Angeles - Two venture-funded social media sites, the social news-ranking site Thoof and social music site Social.fm (formerly Mercora) have been shut down, TechCrunch and GigaOM reported, respectively.

Handmark to Distribute Social.FM Mobile Playlist-sharing Service

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Social.FM, a social music service for mobile and Web users that allows sharing of streaming music playlists, on Monday announced a partnership with mobile media distributor Handmark. Under the deal, Handmark will market and deliver Social.FM through its channels in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Music Service Social.FM Releases Facebook Application

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Social music discovery service Social.FM announced on Wednesday the release of a Facebook application that automatically scans users' profiles and creates an online radio player featuring full-length tracks from their favorite artists. The application also allows Facebook's 52 million users to access the complete music libraries on their PCs directly from their Facebook profiles.

Mercora Changes Name to Social.FM, Launches New Services

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Online music service Mercora, which lets users create their own Internet radio stations, said on Wednesday that it has launched a new service and changed its corporate name to Social.FM. The company said that it has launched free beta versions of its products, including Social.FM Web, a social network revolving around music; Social.FM Desktop, a social media application that allows users to broadcast their favorite artists and playlists; and Social.FM Network, a distributed content delivery network that encodes and streams media in multiple formats to fixed and wireless networks. "[The name] Social.FM better reflects the vision, product and market direction of the company," said Srivats Sampath, the company's president and CEO.
