San Francisco -- The New York Times reports that MarketWatch, a San Francisco-based provider of online business news, financial information and analytical tools, could be sold for as much as $400 million. According to the report, the company, which operates the popular CBS MarketWatch.com site, has been actively seeking bids, though company officials declined to comment. Possible suitors may include The New York Times, the CBS unit of Viacom and Dow Jones & Co, publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

Chicago -- Publishers report that a record 421,955 e-books were sold in the first quarter of 2004, with units sold up 46% and revenues up 28% over the same period a year ago, according to data from the Open eBook Forum. "This quarter eBooks have hit a new high mark for sales," said Open eBook Forum president Steve Potash. "eBooks represent the fastest growing segment of the publishing industry." The group also on Friday released its e-book bestseller list for the month of May, with Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code topping the list for the third straight month.

Overland Park, Kan. -- Wireless network operator Sprint announced on Monday that it has so far this year sold over 3.5 million mobile games to its subscribers, bringing the total number of games the company has sold since launching its Sprint PCS wireless division to 9.5 million. At the end of the first quarter, Sprint reported 4.2 million subscribers for its Sprint PCS Vision wireless content service. "In 2002, Sprint announced its strategy to lead in the mobile-gaming market. Last year, we announced more than 120 titles and 17 partners, proving our success to that point," said Jeff Hallock, vice president of consumer product marketing for Sprint. "In 2003, Sprint had more than 5 million game purchases. We're on track to exceed that number this year with more than 3.5 million purchases in the first 4 months and the promise of more innovations to come in the form of 3D games."

Encino, Calif. -- Consumers spent $4.3 billion renting a total of 1.3 billion DVD movies during 2003, up 55% from 2002, according to data from Rentrak provided by the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA), a trade group of retailers and rental firms. Additionally, Adams Media Research estimates that consumers spent over $12 billion buying DVDs in 2003 -- or 17 DVDs per player -- an increase of 46% from 2002 totals. The group reports that more than one-half of all U.S. households now own a DVD player. "We have simply run out of superlatives to describe the DVD phenomenon," said VSDA president Bo Andersen. "It's bigger and better than anyone imagined it could be."

New York -- The Open eBook Forum, an e-book industry trade group made up of publishers, retailers and e-book technology firms, announced on Monday that total e-book sales for the year 2003 have surpassed 1 million, and are up 64% over comparable sales after the third quarter of 2002. Revenues generated by e-book retailers during the third quarter were $2.6 million, a 37% increase over the $1.9 million reported during the same period last year. "These figures are particularly significant in light of the departure of e-book sales by Gemstar and Barnesandnoble.com," said Open eBook Forum executive director Nick Bogaty. "Double digit growth shows the strength of this industry and e-books represent one of the fastest growing segments in all of publishing."
