Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sonos, a developer of wireless, multi-room home music systems, on Tuesday introduced two new remote ZonePlayers that allow access to one's digital music library from any room in the house, or even backyard. The $499 ZonePlayer 120 is an amplified system that connects directly to speakers anywhere in the home, while the $349 ZonePlayer 90 is a non-amplified system that connects to existing audio equipment like a home theater or stereo. The company also introduced a software update for its devices that includes access to free music downloads, from Classical.com, eMusic and LiveDownloads.com, that are valued at over $200. New York - Sirius Satellite Radio on Wednesday announced a partnership with Sonos, which offers devices that can store an entire music collection and stream it wirelessly throughout the home. Sonos owners can pay $12.95 for access to 80 Sirius channels, while existing Sirius subscribers can pay an extra $2.99 per month to stream the service through Sonos. Separately, Sirius also introduced a number of new products, including the Stiletto 2, the next iteration of its Wi-Fi-enabled portable satellite radio receiver. The $349 device is slated to ship in the fall. The company also announced the launch of the Sportster 5, a new version of its Dock & Play car radio, which will be available in the fall for $169. Finally, Sirius launched the first satellite radio tuner that can receive Sirius Backseat TV, the company's new family TV service for vehicles. Santa Barbara, Calif. - Digital music device developer Sonos on Thursday introduced its Sonos System Software 2.0 update, which enables downloading of songs and access to Web radio stations from its Sonos player through RealNetworks' Rhapsody service without the need for a PC. With the update, the Sonos player can now connect directly to a broadband connection. The offering also includes a 30-day free trial to Real's Rhapsody subscription service.

The Shot Heard Round the WorldIn a moment that sent shockwaves through the personal technology industry, Sonos CEO John MacFarlane told the BBC on Tuesday [July 18, 2006] that he thinks the 'digital home' is still a decade away from becoming a reality. This pointed comment was picked up by hundreds of electronic and print publications... and not a day after I was speaking with a client on why the concept of the 'digital home' is wearing thin.
