Sony PSPBuzz Watch: Lonely Planet on PSPAuthored by Jay Baage on October 31, 2006 - 1:11pm.
Surfing the blogosphere this morning, I came across the release of Lonely Planet travel guides on Sony Playstation Portable, PSP. This is a great example of innovative new ways of delivering traditional content on new media platforms. This marriage makes a lot of sense, especially since Sony reportedly is pimping up the PSP with GPS hardware and software, due to be released in Japan in December. Which backpacker would not want a sweet PSP along for the ride now?

San Diego - Sony Electronics announced on Wednesday that it has added the handheld Sony PSP to the list of devices supporting its LocationFree system, which allows users to access their own subscription TV channels, DVDs, and recorded TV content over a wireless home network, and remotely on a laptop via a broadband connection. The $350 LocationFree Player Pak includes a base station that connects to a set-top TV tuner, DVD player and digital video recorder. Sony PSP Targeted by Trojan Horse MalwareAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 7, 2005 - 7:37am.
Cupertino, Calif. - Antivirus firm Symantec announced this week that it discovered a "Trojan horse" program that can infect Sony's PSP handheld game system and render the device inoperable. The malicious software was discovered on several game websites, being offered as a free download that could enable the device to play pirated games. If a PSP owner unwittingly downloads the patch, "The device basically becomes a brick," said Richard Archdeacon, director of technical services at Symantec. "You might as well use it to build a house."

Sony PSP Software Update to Close Hacker Security BreachAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 30, 2005 - 3:21am.
San Francisco - Sony plans to release a software update for its PSP handheld game system that closes a loophole that allowed hackers to create and run their own software and potentially pirated games on the device, CNET News.com reported. "It is not...what the device was designed for," Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesman Patrick Seybold told News.com. "We plan to deal with this issue with the next system update." The release will be the second such update; when hackers cracked the software that shipped with the PSP, Sony offered an upgrade that patched the hole, and also included a Web browser and Wi-Fi photo sharing capabilities in attempt to entice users to download the optional software.
Hackers Crack Version 2.0 of Sony PSP Security SoftwareAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 28, 2005 - 5:06am.
London -Hackers have once again cracked the security technology on Sony's PSP, enabling pirated games to play on the console, GamesIndustry.biz reported. An earlier version of the security software was also cracked, prompting Sony to produce a software upgrade that plugged the hole; the company enticed PSP owners to download the upgrade by including a Web browser and the ability to share pictures over a Wi-Fi connection. Although the current security breach is so small that only tiny applications like a version of Atari's "Pong" can be made to play on the PSP, a development source told GamesIndustry.biz that, "chances are that they'll be able to run full size apps and games on version 2 firmware within a couple of weeks."
Sony PSP Selling Briskly in First Week, But Retailers Not Sold OutAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on April 1, 2005 - 4:46am.
Los Angeles -- Sony's new PSP (PlayStation Portable) handheld video game console sold well during its first week of availability at North American retailers, but analysts note the device did not sell out at an impressive number of outlets, Reuters reported. Gartner analyst P.J. McNealy estimated that 575,000 were sold during the week, leaving another 300,000 of Sony's initial shipment still on store shelves, while American Technology Research said just 50 of 150 retailers it surveyed this week were sold out of the PSP. Sony delayed its planned PSP launch date in Europe as it strove to supply 1 million units for the North American launch. "The PlayStation Portable (PSP) has been solid but not spectacular," McNealy said in a note. "We believe that the PSP launch, while not the blow-out event expected, will be considered successful as retailers continue to sell through existing inventory levels."
