Report: South Africa's Media Piracy Rates Rise Sharply in 2002Authored by Mark Hefflinger on April 16, 2003 - 1:57am.
Washington -- The amount of pirated movies and other copyrighted materials rose sharply in South Africa in 2002, prompting the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) to recommend in its 2003 special 301 report that the country be placed on the U.S. government's "Priority Watch List," News24.com reported. "Perhaps no country in the world has had a greater increase in audiovisual piracy levels in the last year than South Africa," the report said. The IIPA reports that 81,000 pirate DVDs were seized in South Africa last year, and that pirated movies now account for more than 35-40 percent of the total DVD market there. IIPA estimates total losses to U.S. copyright holders in 2002 in the region were $124.6 million
