MTN Taps Gemalto for Security on First African Mobile TV Service

Cape Town, South Africa - Gemalto, a developer of digital security technologies, said on Thursday that MTN Group will use its technology in the first commercial deployment of mobile TV service on the African continent. MTN South Africa's service, based on the DVB-H mobile TV standard, will be available to all of its more than five million subscribers in South Africa.

Report: South Africa's Media Piracy Rates Rise Sharply in 2002

Washington -- The amount of pirated movies and other copyrighted materials rose sharply in South Africa in 2002, prompting the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) to recommend in its 2003 special 301 report that the country be placed on the U.S. government's "Priority Watch List," News24.com reported. "Perhaps no country in the world has had a greater increase in audiovisual piracy levels in the last year than South Africa," the report said. The IIPA reports that 81,000 pirate DVDs were seized in South Africa last year, and that pirated movies now account for more than 35-40 percent of the total DVD market there.
