What You Can Learn About Marketing From the Brazilian Soccer Team

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on October 23, 2007 - 3:39pm.

Have you ever played soccer with a Brazilian?  On the soccer field, there are many styles that you come to recognize if you have played against enough international players.  Germans have a different style than Mexicans.  As most soccer players will tell you, the Brazilian style of soccer is something special.  Their approach is also why they are seen every World Cup as the team to beat and why Brazilian players have such a legendary status beyond players from most other cultures (the biggest stars or your own team biases not withstanding).  What is it that makes the Brazilians stand out?

Weekend Read: Circus David Beckham Lands In the US

Authored by Jay Baage on July 13, 2007 - 6:51am.
When it comes to winning matches, the US soccer season so far is not going too well for LA Galaxy - it is languishing second from bottom in Major League Soccer's Western Standings. But who cares, soon they will have circus David Beckham to entertain the crowd and the game will come second. Also, if you see it this way, since they can’t hardly suck any more than they do right now, it can really only go up from here.
"This is the story of a star at the top of his form coming to Major League Soccer," says league Commissioner Don Garber, who on Friday will help Los Angeles Galaxy officials unveil England's David Beckham, this nation's newest sports icon and marketing powerhouse. "David will raise the credibility of our league."

Ana Paula Oliveira (2) Attempting to ruffle the feathers of feminists for the second time in the last month (the first coming with US Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard’s cover issue), Playboy has said Brazilian soccer lineswoman Ana Paula Oliveira, a 29-year-old and women’s rights activist, will don its July cover. “If she took that decision, it's because she must have other career thoughts,” said Edson Rezende, president of the confederation's refereeing commission, in Lance, a sports daily.

Soccer’s Beckham to Give Galaxy, MLS a Lift with Recent Strong Play

Authored by Jay Baage on June 1, 2007 - 3:58pm.
In a rare stroke of luck for the Los Angeles Galaxy, barely two months before David Beckham is scheduled to begin play in the MLS, he is playing his best soccer since joining Real Madrid in 2003 - a paradoxical resurrection recently crowned by his return to the English national team. After being ridiculed as more of a pop star than a great soccer talent in his stint with Spanish team Real Madrid, the broad consensus is that he’s one of the great pillars of the team’s comeback to lead La Liga with only two games remaining.

Analysis: LA Galaxy Puts Its Hopes in Beckham, Maybe Zidane

Authored by Jay Baage on April 17, 2007 - 12:26pm.
LA Galaxy general manager, Alexi Lalas, is hoping to tempt French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane to join former Real Madrid teammate David Beckham at the L.A. Galaxy, according to fresh reports. And while the addition would be welcomed, make no mistake, the LA Galaxy and Major League Soccer (MLS) still have a long way to go.

Why the NFL Championship Games Reminded me of David Beckham’s Irrelevance

Authored by Scott Goldberg on January 22, 2007 - 11:16am.
Beckham screaming The Bears-Saints game Sunday was an entrée to the day’s real game, an AFC Championship that will go down for me as having more “This is unbelievable” kind of moments than any I can remember in a long time.  But after everything was over and I had watched 20 episodes of Sports Center before going to bed, the NFL playoffs reminded me of how little David Beckham’s addition to MLS will mean. I thought of how the people paying him $250 million hopefully have something else up their sleeve, or they’ll be explaining why soccer is still the least popular professional team sport in the U.S., and why the league will eventually fall apart because of it.

Buzz Watch: Soccer Star David Beckham Recruited To Los Angeles Galaxy!

Authored by Jay Baage on January 11, 2007 - 3:36pm.
David Beckham, the most recognized soccer player on the planet - also a fashion icon, tabloid fixture and all over marketing giant  - announced a deal on Thursday to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. For a 5-year contract reportedly worth $250 million, Beckham is expected to do for American soccer what the Beatles once did for pop music or Survivor did for Reality TV. I believe the US is ready to finally adopt the world’s biggest sport and Beckman might very well be the catalyst, so this is a very interesting development.
