Report: U.S. Labels Concerned on Spotify Premium Conversions

London - The major record labels are reportedly concerned about the percentage of U.S. users likely to pay for ad-supported streaming music service Spotify's for-pay premium version, the Financial Times reported. Spotify, which is available in several European countries, had planned to launch in the U.S. in the fall, but recently said it would delay the launch to 2010. "We think Spotify is a great service but they're going to have to convince us they can convert enough people from free to paid subscriptions to make it worth our while," one label executive told FT.

Stockholm - Ad-supported streaming music service Spotify on Thursday announced a new offline mode, which will allow paying premium subscribers to sync playlists to their computers for offline play. The feature will allow users to store up to 3,333 tracks on their computers at a time. Separately, the company said it added PayPal as a payment option for Spotify Premium, which costs about $15.94 per month, or $191 annually.

Following the revelation, the appeals court handling the case is expected to rule on whether or not the lay judge's affiliation with Spotify would qualify as a conflict of interest in the case.

London - The chief executive of Spotify, the ad-supported streaming music service, said this week that less than 10% of the company's more than 1 million subscribers are paying for the premium version of the service, which costs about $16.40 per month, Stuff.tv reported. Daniel Ek said that Spotify could be profitable if it "chose to be," according to Stuff.tv, but instead is focused on developing its business. Ek also said that the company's revenue is increasing by 50% a month.

While Spotify, which claims 4 million users in Europe, has deals with labels to offer over 5 million songs where it is available, it has not yet signed any deals with labels for the U.S. In addition to selling ads, Spotify generates revenue through premium subscriptions that strip away ads and offer higher-quality streams -- and also plans to begin selling song downloads.
