Authored by Jay Baage on May 23, 2008 - 6:21am.

The theatrical trailer for “The Clone Wars”, the first animated Star Wars film by Lucasfilm Animation, was just released. I didn't even know that there was an animated Star Wars movie in the works before I read about it on Laughing Squid, but it makes sense. Advance word is that this is the film that should have served as the prequel to Star Wars. The movie hits theatres August 15 and will be followed by the weekly The Clone Wars series on Cartoon Network.

FBI, Customs Agents Shut Down BitTorrent Server Offering "Star Wars"

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on May 25, 2005 - 6:32am.
Washington -- U.S. authorities announced on Wednesday that they have shut down a BitTorrent file-sharing server that was offering copies of "Revenge of the Sith" and other copyrighted movies and software for download. The FBI and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) executed ten warrants in eight states and seized the main server for Elite Torrents, a network with 133,000 members that offered 17,800 movie, music and software titles, which were collectively downloaded 2.1 million times. A message on the site today reads: "This site has been permanently shut down by the Federal Bureau of investigation and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement." The latest "Star Wars" film was available on Elite Torrents six hours before it debuted in theaters, and had been downloaded more than 10,000 times, authorities said. "Through today's landmark enforcement actions, ICE and the FBI have shut down a group of online criminals who were using legitimate technology to create one-stop shopping for the illegal sharing of movies, games, software and music," said Michael J. Garcia, Homeland Security assistant secretary for ICE.

Copy of "Star Wars: Episode III" Already Leaked Online

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on May 19, 2005 - 7:48am.
London -- A "workprint" of the new "Star Wars" movie has surfaced on the Internet, according to reports on websites including Waxy.org and Cinematical.com. Reuters reported that several screener copies of the film had been posted on the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network, but these copies were apparently fakes -- possibly seeded by the movie industry to frustrate would-be pirates. A DVD-R of a workprint of the film, which includes timecodes on each frame, was posted online by a group called VISA on Wednesday. A workprint would likely have originated from within the post-production process for the film, rather than from a moviegoer who had smuggled a camcorder into a screening and posted the resulting recording online.

Lucas: Piracy Fears Prompted Early Release of "Star Wars" DVD Trilogy

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on September 17, 2004 - 4:08am.
Los Angeles -- "Star Wars" creator George Lucas said in an interview with the Associated Press this week that fear of piracy was the main reason for the decision to release the original film trilogy on DVD this week, instead of following the release of the last film in the series, as was originally planned. "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" is slated for release in May 2005, while the DVD trilogy containing "A New Hope," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" was released on Tuesday. "A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales," Lucas told AP. "It really just came down to, there may not be a market when I wanted to bring it out, which was like, three years from now. So rather than just sit by and watch the whole thing fall apart, better to bring it out early and get it over with."
