Several advertising agencies have also set up locations in Second Life, and companies are beginning to use it to foster collaboration among geographically scattered workforces.

Analysis: Experts Slightly Bearish on Ad Spending and Google’s Q3 Earnings

Authored by Jay Baage on October 17, 2006 - 12:03pm.

I have read a lot of speculation about what to make of Yahoo!’s recent statements about seeing a slowing growth in Internet advertising spending. On Tuesday the company reported a 38% drop in profit as sales growth fell to the lowest in four years. Is Yahoo!’s problems company specific? If not, does it mean that Google will disappoint too when the company releases its earnings on Thursday?

GoogleCheckout There is both good and bad news for Google in new data released this week. The bad news is that neither of Google's new domains - Checkout, Calendar or Spreadsheet - made it into the top 20 Google domains during the week ending July 15, 2006. This is all according to new data released Wednesday by Internet research company HitWise.

Interesting Results from Pearl Jam’s Copyright Experiment

Authored by Jay Baage on July 6, 2006 - 8:39am.

After a six years sales decline and negative PR surrounding lawsuits against 15,000 individuals, a recent experiment by Pearl Jam offers a glimmer of hope that major record labels and their customers may be reconciling.

Nielsen SoundScan figures through the week ending July 2 show that sales of digital albums soared 126% during the first half of the year, while digital tracks rose 77%. This does not make up for the decline in physical album sales, but it shows that the prospect of getting paid for music online, despite of P2P? services offering the same pirated albums and tracks for free, is not that far-fetched after all.

Major League Baseball in Legal Dispute with Fantasy Site Over Stats

Authored by dmw on May 16, 2006 - 12:59pm.
New York - Major League Baseball's Internet arm has sued a company that provides real-world statistics on players for use in online fantasy baseball leagues, arguing the company needs to purchase a license for the data, The New York Times reported. St. Louis-based CBC Distribution and Marketing says the data it publishes are newsworthy facts, protected by the First Amendment, and do not contain copyrighted or trademarked images of the players or logos of their teams. "(CBC's) business here is not publishing statistics. The business here is running a league," Major League Baseball Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman told The Times. The league has licensed statistics, as well as logos and images, to 7 operators of fantasy sites this year, including CBS SportsLine -- down from 19 last season. The case at hand, which will come to trial on Sept. 5, will pit the players' claims to a "right of publicity" with regard to how their names are used in commercial ventures, against traditional First Amendment free press protections.
