Well, investors have already made up there mind about it. Apple's stock tanked yesterday and it continues the downward spiral today.

It is rumored that Steve Jobs will announce a video rental service for iTunes in his much-anticipated MacWorld keynote on Tuesday. Adding fuel to the fire of speculation, Netflix has preempted Apple's announcement saying it will offer unlimited access to its streaming video library to most customers. To lend context to the announcements, I wanted to profile Netflix and Blockbuster, the two biggest players in online movie rental.

Waiter, the iPhone Tastes a Little Fishy

Authored by Scott Goldberg on September 7, 2007 - 7:32am.
Rotten AppleWhat did you think when you found out the price of an iPhone dropped $200 two days ago?  Did you scratch your head and raise your eyebrows?  Did you celebrate?  Did you sell your Apple stock?  Did you buy more shares?  It was confusing, a new precedent for the company.  Analysts noted the “highly uncommon” move by Steve Jobs.  The way the iCon delivered the news you’d be forgiven for applauding and cheering, as everyone at Moscone Center did.  The man is a magician, after all.  But no one reacted as strongly, to be sure, as iPhone owners, especially the suckers who camped out for it in June.  If you listened close enough you could hear the collective grumble.  It said, “What the F*CK did you just say, Steve?”  And Steve heard it too.

Analysis: Steve Jobs Raises the Bar in the Digital Music Market

Authored by Jay Baage on September 5, 2007 - 9:06am.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs just announced a new  "iPod Touch” with a 3.5 inch widescreen, WiFi and touch-screen functionality at a product event in San Francisco. From now on, you can purchase and download content from iTunes straight from the device. And Jobs just dropped the price of the iPhone to $399 (instead of $599). With those moves, he makes fairly sure that Apple keeps its grip of the digital music market for the near future.

It is confirmed - Apple is hosting a special media event on September 5th in San Francisco. As usual, what will happen at this event is a mystery, but the invitation features a silhouetted man with an iPod in iTunes CoverFlow interface. The caption reads “The Beat Goes On”, a reference to The Beatles' final press release, which was issued by Apple Records on April 10, 1970, following the band's split.

Rupert Murdoch vs. Steve Jobs in DMW’s New Poll

Authored by dmw on August 13, 2007 - 11:25am.

After a tight first round last week in which Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Satoru Iwata, Rupert Murdoch, and Google’s Sergey Brin & Larry Page went head to head for the title of “The Most Powerful Player Today in Media, Entertainment, & Technology,” the readers responded with resounding support for Murdoch and Jobs.  Advancing them to the final round, take our new poll and tell us what you think.  And if you think neither is worthy of the title, or if you have a strong opinion why you chose one over the other, leave a comment and let us know.  Steve Hawley had the comment of the week last week when he wrote:

Apple, Nintendo Lead PFL (Pro Fanboy League) Power Rankings

Authored by Scott Goldberg on July 26, 2007 - 11:58am.
Passionate FansNot familiar with the PFL (Professional Fanboy League)?  You’re missing out, buddy.  It’s one of the most intense leagues around, right up there with the NFL on the Passion Meter.  And at the moment the PFL is being dominated by Apple, with Nintendo coming in a close second.  Don’t agree?  Did you catch the highlights of the iPhone purchasers the day it was released?  If you were from Mongolia and had never heard of the iPhone you would’ve seen those clips and thought they had won the lottery.  But not only had they not won anything, they had actually paid for something.  And they paid a lot for that something.  The passion they conveyed in purchasing nothing more than a phone, and the days they spent camping out for that phone (which turned out to be completely unnecessary) was unreal.  The enthusiasm inside the stores looked like the streets of Milan the day Italy won the World Cup.  Here’s the complete list of the 2007 Pro Fanboy Power Rankings:

What’s Cooler than an Apple Sticker on Your Car?

Authored by Scott Goldberg on July 19, 2007 - 9:17am.
Apple Sticker on a BMWTen things, in fact, and probably several thousand more.  Yes, Apple stickers on cars are gaining momentum.  They say, “I’m an Apple Person,” something very hip to be right now, it seems.  Is this a passing trend, or is it here for eternity?  No Fear stickers haven’t gone anywhere, after all.  But it might be akin to a trendy political statement, the way a “W” with a slash across it likely won’t resonate twenty years from now.  Or, more drastically, My Child is an Honor Student at Pokemon Kindercare.  So one day you’ll either be asked on a date, “Come on, admit it, you once put an Apple sticker on your car,” or it will continue to represent a Badge of Coolness.  The Vegas odds, however, are on the former, and because of that, here are ten things cooler than an Apple sticker on your car:

Analysis: How Apple Will Use The iPhone To Take Over The Wireless Industry

Authored by Scott Karp on July 1, 2007 - 7:51am.

Steve Jobs isn’t stupid. He knows that AT&T Wireless sucks. So why lock the revolutionary iPhone into a crappy network? Because Jobs knows that everyone will buy an iPhone anyway, even if they hate the network. And that, as Umair points out, shifts all the power to Apple.

Buzz Watch: Steve Jobs - Embracing Third Party Developers?

Authored by Jay Baage on June 11, 2007 - 3:04pm.
No major announcement came out of the Apple Developers’ Conference in San Francisco on Monday. The most interesting take-ways were that Apple will release a version of its Safari browser for Windows machines, and, also, "opening” up the iPhone to third party applications, via Apple’s Safari, but still.
