Calif. - In a move that caught
most analysts by surprise, business software giant Oracle (NASD: ORCL) said on Monday that
it will acquire Sun Microsystems (NASD: JAVA), the struggling server maker, in a deal worth
$7.4 billion. IBM (NYSE: IBM) had long been considered the frontrunner to acquire Sun until
last week, when talks reportedly broke down.

San Francisco - Neil Young said on Tuesday that he will release his entire repertoire on Sony's (NYSE: SNE) Blu-ray Disc format, the Associated Press reported. The veteran rocker announced the plans at a conference for Sun Microsystems, whose Java platform powers the interactive features on Blu-ray discs. The first 10-disc set, covering 1963-1972 and set for release in the fall, will include songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and other content that users will be able to download directly to the discs over the Internet as it become available. Barcelona - Openwave Systems announced on Monday that it has partnered with Sun Microsystems, to integrate its MIDAS media software for cell phones with Sun's cell phone version of its Java technology. The companies said the combined technologies will allow for more personalization on cell phones beyond ringtones and traditional applications, integrating music libraries, music store and music player applications. Separately, Openwave said it partnered with mobile TV providers IceTV and Nexage, to enable mobile network operators to provide mobile live TV and video-on-demand on cell phones running its MIDAS software. The company also said that its Musiwave unit has launched a trial of its mobile streaming radio service with wireless network operator Orange in France.
