Report: World Mobile Games Market Doubles in 2005 to Surpass $2 BillionAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on December 8, 2005 - 6:43am.
London - The world mobile games market doubled in value over the past year to surpass $2 billion in revenues, and will be worth $8.3 billion by 2010, according to a report from market research firm Screen Digest. The U.S. and European mobile games markets are beginning to erode the positions of their Asian counterparts, now making up 52% of the total market. The report notes that major game publishers have largely faltered in the space, as U.S.-based Jamdat Mobile and France-based Gameloft together account for 30% of mobile game revenues in the U.S. and Europe, while only THQ Wireless has emerged among major publishers in the mobile games space. The report also noted that over $500 million has been invested in the mobile games market since 1999.
U.S. Notebook Sales Surpass Desktops for First Time in MayAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on June 6, 2005 - 10:52am.
San Diego -- For the first time in U.S. history, retail sales of notebook computers surpassed those of desktops in May, according to research firm Current Analysis. Notebook sales grew from 45.9% of the total PC retail market in May 2004 to 53.3% of last month. "The past few months have seen an increase in the number of retail notebook players, with lesser-known value players Acer and Medion gaining shelf space at major retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA," said analyst Sam Bhavnani. "In addition, notebook pricing has dropped considerably." Prices, in fact, have fallen an average of 17% over the past year. The firm said that notebooks nearly topped desktops in August 2004, on the strength of intense back–to-school advertising by Toshiba.
BMI: 2005 U.S. Ringtone Retail Sales to Surpass $500 MillionAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 9, 2005 - 2:54am.
New York -- Performing rights organization BMI, which represents more than 300,000 songwriters, predicts that retail sales of cell phone ringtones in the U.S. this year will surpass $500 million, up from $245 million in 2004 and $68 million in 2003. The organization, which has processed over 150 million ringtone sales since entering the market in 2001, said it based its projection on census-based sales data aggregated from 225 mobile entertainment retailers. "We see the growth trend in ringtones and mobile entertainment continuing through mid 2006," said Richard Conlon, BMI vice president of business development. "We believe that the market will double for the ringtone sector alone. Any revenues derived from the ringback-tone services and mobile subscription music services, which have just begun to roll out in the U.S., will be incremental."
Report: Broadband Subscribers to Surpass Dial-Up by Late 2006Authored by Mark Hefflinger on August 2, 2004 - 9:15am.
Washington, D.C. -- By late 2006, more people will be using broadband Internet connections in the U.S. than dial-up services, according to new figures from the Yankee Group. The milestone had been forecast to occur later, but the firm said that the number of DSL subscribers has grown faster than previously expected. "We forecast that by year-end 2008, there will be more than 52 million broadband households," said Patrick Mahoney, an analyst at Yankee. "The 2004 forecast is marginally higher than the 2003 forecast, because of slightly higher than expected take rates, as well as continued low pricing by DSL, increased speeds and availability." Comcast, the largest U.S. cable TV operator, led all broadband providers with 5.7 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter, while SBC led the DSL category with just under 4 million.
