How To Blog, Party, Learn, Promote & Network Like A Rockstar At SXSW 2009

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 13, 2009 - 11:28am.
As I write this, I'm on the plane headed to South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin for my third year. One big question newbies and veterans of the show are likely thinking about is how to get the most out of their experience given the flood of events, people, conversations and opportunities that the show will have. I did a quick Twitter search for "#sxsw" yesterday afternoon and it had 100 new conversations using the keyword over just 60 seconds. Equated to meteorological terms, SXSW isn't a flood or a tornado - it's an ELE (Extinction Level Event).

SXSW Conversation: Thurston Moore & Steve Reich

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on March 16, 2008 - 3:23pm.

When I first saw it on the conference portion of the SXSW website, I knew I'd be there: a conversation between Thurston Moore, the singer and guitar player in pioneering art-rock troupe Sonic Youth, and Steve Reich, the heralded American minimalist composer whose percussion masterworks include "Drumming" and "Music for 18 Musicians." Moore, at 49, is arguably the wisest elder of indie rock, his band Sonic Youth having cranked out some 16 albums since forming in the early 80's, while Reich, who is 72, is arguably the greatest living American composer, having influenced a subsequent generation of artists bridging classical music, rock, electronica, and even hip-hop.

SXSW: Lou Reed is Not a Fan of the MP3

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on March 13, 2008 - 12:32pm.

Austin, Texas - Lou Reed is decidedly frosty on the notion of digital music. A classic audiophile. "Technology is making it easier to make things worse," he proclaimed during his keynote interview on Thursday at SXSW, with veteran music producer and 20-year collaborator Hal Willner. "If you are one of those people like me who like 'good sound,' you need good speakers, a good stereo, and (as an artist) your price of recording goes up, because you need a good mic, good cables...If you don't like good sound, go with MP3."

Analysis: 6 Reasons Twitter Rocks and Sucks Simultaneously At SXSW

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 11, 2008 - 6:16am.

If last year's SXSW was Twitter's coming out party, this year it achieved utility status. A utility is something that is always on, and essential. To lose it would be to thrust yourself into the dark ages. Water, electricity, gas ... and Twitter. Sound like an exaggeration? Not for anyone who has spent the last few days watching the incessant live twittering at SXSW. Because not every reader is as tricked out in extreme geekdom as those at SXSW, here's a brief description of Twitter:

Authored by Jay Baage on March 9, 2008 - 6:37pm.

The South By Southwest conferences and festivals in Austin, Texas, have already kicked off and will go on through most of this week. For those of you that are going, DMW is happy to once again bring you the hottest list of buzz bands and parties, courtesy of music publicist Fiona Bloom:

How to Create a Microbrand Like GapingVoid

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 16, 2007 - 9:42am.

It might sometimes seem like everything is going micro.  With microlending, loans are getting smaller.  With online video, entertainment is getting shorter.  Technology devices are, of course, getting smaller. Micro is hot.  So it should come as no surprise that the next big thing coming fast into the marketing world is actually a little thing: microbrands.

5 Brilliant Marketing Ideas from SxSW

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 14, 2007 - 3:08pm.

Austin, Texas - Over the next week, I'll posting some of the other insights I will be taking from the event, but in the meantime here are just a few marketing ideas that struck me as remarkable or noteworthy from SxSW:

First Impressions at SxSW

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 12, 2007 - 7:42pm.
This might be an odd title to a post about SxSW since the event has been going on for several days now and the "SxSW" tag is already at the top of the Technorati WTF buzz index.  But regardless, I just arrived today at the midpoint of the Interactive event at South by Southwest and it seems as though most everyone has been partying and networking for the past two days.  Coming in today feels a bit like jumping into a movie in the middle and trying to catch up.

SXSW: Don't Miss These Acts!

Authored by Jay Baage on March 11, 2007 - 8:08pm.
With over 2000 parties, 1800 showcases and lots more, South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, March 14-18 has become the place to be if you are in the music industry. But it can be a little overwhelming. Music publicist Fiona Bloom, who usually is on top of things (she turned me on to the Arctic Monkeys and many other acts long before they became big), has done some cherry-picking for those of you who will attend:
